Statement Song

Born in Chicago and currently based in Nashville, Doug Hoekstra will be bringing his songcraft to Canal Street Tavern on Saturday, September 29.  His fourth record, Around the Margins, is a thinking and dreaming man's approach to the solo, adult-oriented singer-songwriter area of musical composition.  The album has insightful lyrics and a downtime, yearning sound, but it also has a real storybrook quality and some avant-garde touches that sweeten things up and reveal these songs are much-pondered and thoughtfully arranged pieces of work.  This disc covers so much musical ground that it will be interesting to see how he chooses to pull it off in the live setting.

Appearing with Hoekstra will be folkie Lucy Kaplansky, a songwriter-turned-psychologist-turned-songwriter-again.  Hoekstra and Kaplansky will perform at 9:30 p.m.  Admission is $10.  Canal Street is located at 308 E. First Street.  Call 461-9343
