GET RHYTHM (UK - August, 2002) DOUG HOEKSTRA THE PAST IS NEVER PAST (Inbetweens) Doug has put together an album consisting of songs that, for whatever reason, were left in the cupboard or were recorded for tributes and compilations going back ten years. You would think that this would make for an album thats disjointed, but Dougs whispered vocals and gentle persona tie the tracks together giving the album a flow. "The Past is Never Past" is an airy, minimalist, reflective album that has a clean summery feel, and because Hoekstra is such a one of, the songs fall easy on the ear without being in any way easy listening. The Past is Never Past comes across as a far more interesting release than the very well received Around the Margins." It could be that its that artist stripped down mentality, I dont care, this is a much more enjoyable collection of songs. Drops Fell From My Fingertips, Oh, Zamira, Break My Fall, so fragile. I would also just like to say that anyone who writes a song called Staring Out the Window is alright by me Return to Press |
