GRAPE JUICE & POTASSIUM

Recently I have been trying to get a handle on the vitamins/minerals that I take in, to get a better idea of whether or not a supplement is needed. In the course of checking on my potassium I decided to give Welch's a call to find out how much potassium is in their purple grape juice. I knew it was supposed to be a good source, but the info they provided was quite a surprise. It actually depends a LOT on whether it is bottled or frozen, and a little on what part of the country you are in. For example, in NC the bottle has 382mg a cup, while the frozen has 90mg a cup (prepared). After checking another state I found that you can get 3 to 4x MORE potassium by buying the bottle over the frozen. Now I know it may be a little more expensive, but it is probably cheaper than a potassium supplement. :) For more info call Welch's at 1-800-340-6870. GUARDIANS AD LITEM-MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Most of us have read the stories of children in abusive situations, where it seems that the courts have lost their minds with the "solutions" implemented. Well, as one of my favorite 6th grade teachers (Hi Mrs. Brawders!!) used to remind us, instead of complaining...DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT! Or as others say, be part of the solution. Most county courthouses have Guardian Ad Litem programs. Volunteers, that's where you come in, represent these children in court by working with an attorney's advocate.  You investigate the case, interview social workers/parents/guardians, and promote the best interest of the child. In other words you make recommendations to the court based on what you think is best for the child.  Most courts will provide training before you actually take on a case, in our county it is 10-15 hrs. If you are looking for a worthwhile volunteer position, give your county courthouse a call. POST IT...by your phone.

NEW, IMPROVED TOOTHPASTE

Colgate is the first company to produce toothpastes that the ADA has given a Seal of Acceptance for protection against plaque, gingivitis, and cavities.  Most other toothpastes have the seal for cavities only. Colgate Total and Total Fresh Stripe (the latter isn't a kids' toothpaste, but my kids like it) have an antibacterial agent that helps keep your mouth clean even after you brush for up to 12 hours. If you have genes like ours, you might want to check it out. :) You can also check out their web site for more info at http://www.colgate.com POST IT...on your shopping list and/or by your computer.

SKIP THE FAT-FREE SALAD DRESSINGS?

As mentioned in a couple of previous newsletters, I have truly enjoyed the Real Age web site and book. Their tips of the day have been so helpful that I have asked permission to share them with you, now & then. The Real Age people have consented, but I do need to have some copyright info at the end.  But I think you will find it is well worth it.  "The fat-free salad dressing that you thought was making your salad healthier may actually prevent you from getting the most out of your vegetables. Spinach, tomatoes, and carrots-basically all dark green, red, orange, and yellow vegetables-are rich in cancer-fighting nutrients.  Studies have found that people who eat 3-4 servings of these veggies a day have lower rates of breast, colon, bladder, and prostate cancer. But many of the antioxidants that give these vegetables their nutritional punch are best absorbed by the body when there's a little bit of fat. The monounsaturated fats found in olive and canola oil are best. STAMPS BY MAIL...NOT ONLINE

For you long time readers you may already know that I have purchased stamps by mail for a long time to avoid the post office lines. So imagine my delight, when I found out you could now order them online. Then imagine my irritation when I found out they also charge $1 for priority mail on all orders. :( When I order my stamps by mail I write a check, pay no additional fees over the cost of the stamps, and usually get my stamps within 2 days. So instead of ordering online, save yourself a dollar AND a trip to the post office, just ask your mail carrier for the stamps by mail order form, or pick some up at your local post office. POST IT...by your stamps.

JOKE (from Robert P.)

This has been floating around the internet for a while now, but I still thought it was worth a repeat. "Sometimes it DOES take a rocket scientist: Scientists at NASA built a gun specifically to launch dead chickens at the windshields of airliners, military jets, and the space shuttle, all traveling at maximum velocity. The idea was to simulate the frequent incidents of collisions with airborne fowl to test the strength of the windshields. British engineers heard about the gun & were eager to test it on the windshields of their new high-speed trains. Arrangements were made, and a gun was sent to the British engineers. When the gun was fired, the engineers stood shocked as the chicken hurtled out of the barrel, crashed into the shatterproof shield, smashed it to smithereens, blasted through the control console, snapped the engineer's backrest in two, and embedded itself in the back wall of the cabin, like an arrow shot from a bow. The horrified engineers sent NASA the disastrous results of the experiment, along with the designs of the windshield, and begged the US scientists for suggestions.  NASA responded with a one-line memo: 'Thaw the chicken'." :)

FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK

RE: Cheap Printer Refills

Carolynne wrote with the experience of one who recently did her own refills from this company. She said that it is VERY important to follow all the directions, even if something doesn't seem to be needed. One little instruction she skipped kept the ink from coming out correctly. She said, "I just wanted to send this in, because I know some poor soul will have the same difficulties I had and from my experience I have learned that this is a very important step that need not be neglected." Thanks Carolynne for giving us the heads up.

All for this issue. Thanks for those of you asking about how we fared with the hurricane. We were spared & only had to do without electricity for about 21 hours. But be sure to participate in the programs to provide support to those in eastern NC who are still flooded. They have a rough road ahead & need our prayers.

God Bless, Sharon
