HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS/SITES

Well, this one may be a little late for some of you, but if Floyd stays on his current path, our town of Fayetteville may have the eye going right over it. But even if this info is too late for Floyd, the hurricane season ain't over yet. :) Also most experts recommend that you prepare for Y2K the same way you would for a hurricane. So here is a web site that has a hurricane preparedness list, but since it is not a nationally advertised site, it is a little easier to get onto it & load than others. In fact, I think it is a lot better site than most of the national ones (for Atlantic storms). Go to

http://www.ncstormtrack.com. If you are not online, then contact yourlocal Red Cross, which usually distributes free material on how to prepare for the storms. Some things that aren't on the lists that you might want to add once you print it out...turn your freezer down to the coldest setting so that if you do lose power, it will take longer for it to thaw. Throw a blanket or towel in to take up space (a full freezer stays colder longer), but ONLY if the power is still on, so that it has a chance to get cold. On large full size freezers, throw a blanket over the outside too if you lose power. Start making ice in your own freezer & when you fill up the freezer containers, then start on an ice chest. Use the dishwasher & washing machine, even if you don't have a full load to catch up before the power goes. NEVER assume that the power/phone/water companies know you are without service, CALL IT IN as soon as it happens. Send an email to your friends & family who might be worried & want updates with the local TV station's site, so that they can find out what is going on even if you are unable to reach them. POST IT...on your fridge.

SUPER CHEAP PRINTER REFILLS

Originally saw this info on the http://www.stretcher.com  web site, and he has had so much positive feedback on it that even though I haven't tried it myself yet, I decided I should share it with you anyway. Printers, whether laser, ink jet, or color, can be very expensive to buy refill cartridges for, no matter what the brand. This company sells bulk ink and provides directions on how to refill your own cartridges, so for a Laser Printer you might end up paying only $20 a refill, for an ink jet maybe only $2.20/refill! To check it out & find the price & directions for your printer go to http://www.oddparts.com/ink/, or you can call 1-888-728-2465 toll free for more info. They ship worldwide and even have a calculator to convert your currency. POST IT...by your computer.

BIBLE MEMORY SONGS

Pat E. wrote, "Oh, did you run out of room this month? I was so looking forward to the Bible memory songs...Maybe next issue? I want to teach them to my children. Thanks for the great newsletter." Yes, Pat I did run out of room, but thanks for your patience. Here are the 2 songs, for the disciples' names & for the 10 Commandments, and I also highly recommend The Singing Bible audio cassette set, and the "Hide Them in Your Heart" videos for less well known tunes to memorize verses & other things.

Disciples' Names (sung to the tune of "Jesus Loves Me")

Jesus called them one by one, Peter, Andrew, James, and John.  Then came Philip, Thomas too, Matthew and Bartholomew.  James the one they call the Less, Simon, also Thaddeus.  Twelve disciples Judas made, Jesus was by him betrayed.  Yes, Jesus called them.  Yes, Jesus called them.  Yes, Jesus called them, And they all followed Him.

+ + +

The Ten Commandments (Sung to the tune of "Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow")

There is no other God but Me.  Before no idol bow the knee.  Take not the name of God in vain. Nor dare the Sabbath Day profane.  Give both thy parents honor due.  Take heed that thou no murder do.  Abstain from words and deeds unclean.  Nor steal, though thou be poor and mean.  Nor make a willful lie, nor love it.  What is thy neighbor's dare not covet.  These 10 commandments God gave you,  To show His will in all you do.

The above songs are from Reformed Publishing Bible curriculum, Suffer the Children and Show Me Thy Ways, although they have probably been around a long time. POST IT...on your fridge, in your child's room or Sunday school class, etc.

EXERCISE & WATER

I am loving all these daily tips from http://www.realage.com. And here's one I thought would be helpful to you also. In addition to the 8-12 glasses of liquid you should drink every day, you should also drink an additional 1-3 glasses for every hour you exercise. Drink even before you feel thirsty. If you feel thirsty, then you have already lost 1-2% of your body weight from dehydration. Mild dehydration is considered a 2% loss. My friend Maria suggests drinking until you feel a little full before a workout, and that does seem to help. Your performance will be a lot better if you are well hydrated. POST IT...near your exercise gear.

HOMESCHOOL EZINES

Knowing that many of our readers are homeschoolers, I thought you might enjoy checking out this web site http://www.helmonline.com/pages/res/elists/elistsindex.shtml. It has a list of free homeschool (and other related subjects) ezines that you can request. They are even kind enough to list the Make a Note. :) You will be amazed at the number of angles you can see in these publications. POST IT...by your computer.

AVOIDING ATM FEES

If you would like to avoid the fees that ATM owners charge, then here are a few suggestions. Use the cash back feature at grocery stores, gas stations, and other places when you make purchases. That way you are getting a little extra cash back without the fee. In some cases you can write a check for over the purchase amount to also get cash back. And some banks will reimburse you for ATM fees (some only up to a certain amount) if you are using an ATM that is not their own. USAA banking has this benefit, so even if they don't have an ATM in your area (they are based in Texas, but have clients all over the world, mostly U. S. military), you won't have to pay the fees. It might actually be cheaper to have an out of town bank! POST IT...in your wallet with your ATM card.

"BACK ISSUE TREASURE"- SCHOOL PICTURES

Yes, it is that time of year again, school pictures. So why not request the September 1, 1998 back issue for the article on helping school pictures to be your very best. Best colors to wear, long sleeve or short, when to get haircuts, etc. Send an email to make-a-note-issues@xc.org  with ...MAN-002...either in the subject line or the body of the message, and the back issue will automatically be sent to you. It also has a recipe for a great party dip. Another thing you might want to consider is going to a Wal-Mart, Kmart, or similar store portrait studio to get the pictures done.  The child can still have the photo taken with the school, but in general you will get MUCH more for your money, and the picture will usually turn out just as nice (probably because mom will be there to straighten your collar:)) at the store studios. POST IT...near your computer.

JOKE (In Honor of Hurricane Floyd)

Ever notice how a 4-yr-old's voice is louder than 200 adult voices? Several years ago, a man returned home from a trip just when a storm hit, with crashing thunder & severe lightning. As he came into the bedroom about 2am, he found his two children in bed with his wife, apparently scared by the loud storm. He resigned himself to sleeping in the guest room. The next day, he talked to the children & explained that it was ok to sleep with mom when the storm was bad, but when daddy was expected home, to please not to sleep with mom that night. They said ok. After the next trip several weeks later, mom & kids picked dad up in the terminal at the appointed time.  Since the plane was late, everyone had come to the gate to wait for the plane's arrival, along with hundreds of other folks waiting for their arriving passengers. As dad entered the waiting area, his son saw him & came running, shouting, "Hi Dad! I've got some good news!" As dad waved back, he said loudly, "What is the good news?" "Nobody slept with mommy while you were away this time!," the son shouted. The airport became very quiet, as everyone in the waiting area slowly looked at the son, then turned to the dad, and then searched the rest of the area to see if they could figure out exactly who mom was. (She was probably the one hiding in a corner :))

QUOTE

"The essence of lying is in deception, not in words. A lie may be told by silence, by equivocation, by the accent on a syllable, by a glance of the eye attaching a peculiar significance to a sentence. All these kinds of lies are worse and baser by many degrees than a lie plainly worded. No form of blinded conscience is so far sunk as that which comforts itself for having deceived because the deception was by gesture or silence, instead of utterance."

---John Ruskin (1819-1900)

FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK

RE: Film-Which Brand is Best?

Kim wrote that she had seen a Canadian news article recently that did a test. They had a photographer take several rolls of pictures of the same thing with the same lighting, but then they took them to different photo processing businesses. In some cases the photos turned out great, and in others they were horrible. She said, "I am now under the impression that who does the developing has as much to do with how your pictures come out as what kind of film you use." I agree with Kim and had forgotten that in the past I have switched developers because I didn't feel the photos were turning out well. Thanks for the comments Kim!

Wendy wrote on the same article that she had done her own experiment where she took 4 different cameras with 100 and 400 ISO of Kodak & Fuji, respectively and took 4 pictures of the same subject. She said, "I could really tell the difference in the skin tones (which are yellow) vs. landscapes (which are primarily blue/green). I...found that Kodak is better for facial tones and Fuji is better for landscape type pictures." She also mentions the same thing that Kim did, that processor machines can be set incorrectly & then it won't matter what film you use. Thanks Wendy for sharing the info with us.

Well, hopefully the hurricane won't put us offline for too long. But if you don't get your next Make a Note by the 1st, just check out that NC Stormtrack web site above and see what is going on in Fayetteville, NC. God willing we won't be without power too long, or perhaps the storm will even decide to go out to sea. :)

God Bless, Sharon ^I^
