FORMATTING THIS NEWSLETTER

We are still working on trying to find the best way to send this newsletter out where it will be easily formatted & read on all email programs. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to "fix" it if it arrives disjointed. If you are on CompuServe then click on EDIT in the top left screen corner, then click on SWITCH FONT, and it will usually adjust your email so you can read it easily. On most other email systems there should be something similar. If you cannot find it yourself, then contact the ISP by phone and ask them for instructions. Also please let our WONDERFUL, and VERY MUCH APPRECIATED list server manager know if you are having problems.  You can email him at Lwilson@xc.org and tell him you are having problems receiving the Make a Note. POST IT...by your computer.

CHRISTMAS CHECKLIST REMINDER

If you are staying on schedule, then you should have had your family photo done and ordered any gifts you wanted to purchase by catalog. In October you should order Christmas stamps, start collecting items for your Operation Christmas Child shoebox (http://www.samaritan.org OR 1-800-353-5949 for more info).  And don't forget that OCTOBER is CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH, so don't forget to include your clergy on your shopping lists or calendar. POST IT...on your calendar.

SAVE $$$ ON AIRLINE TICKETS

In a previous issue (May 2, 1998) we have discussed how to save when purchasing airline tickets, but here is a new one that was recently included on the www.abcnews.com web site. Do NOT purchase tickets on the weekends.  Because airlines do not normally change fares on the weekends as they do constantly during the week, they often will make them a little higher for the weekend purchasers. This might also be applicable to other travel fares. So wait until Monday to make that call. POST IT...in the yellow pages under airlines.

LIGHTING YOUR WORLD

How often have you entered a home & felt more like you were going into a cave? When we first moved into our current home, the previous owner had tried to save money with the lowest watt light bulbs possible. What a difference a few watts can make! We always use the maximum wattage possible, unless it tends to blind us. Besides if you end up using low watt bulbs, does that mean you have to turn on MORE lights to get the level of light you want? Recently I noticed that our lamp shades in our living room had become old and yellowed and seemed to be blocking the light, even though I put high watt bulbs in. So off to our local home product store I went and found a couple of new lamp shades for only $14 each. They were smooth (easier to dust than folds or fabric), and the shade was white speckled with little dashes of color (white lets out more light, speckles hide spots better), and single layered (lets more light through). Well, it brightened up the whole room, what a huge difference. So take a look at your lighting & make sure you have enough or that your shades aren't working against you.  A FANTASTIC book on what kind of furniture, home items, carpet, etc to purchase for your home that hold up well, clean well, etc is Don Aslett's Let Your House Do the Housework. What always amazes me is that the things that look good and hold up well often are less expensive than the items that show all the dirt and don't last. You may have heard his name from his other books, Clutter's Last Stand or Is There Life After Housework, both also highly recommended. One hint he gives relating to lamps is to consider hanging ones as opposed to table ones, that way they give off more light (being elevated) and you don't have to pick them up to dust the table. One warning though, with all this extra light, you may discover your carpet/furniture needs to be cleaned or replaced. :) POST IT...on your shopping list.

RECENT PHONE PROBLEMS?

Have you recently had trouble with your phone ringing back when you hang up, but only having a dial tone, or a beeping signal? The phone disconnecting when you are speaking with someone? We started having problems like this a few months ago in our area and I started running into people from all over town having similar problems. They couldn't find anything wrong with the phones, but finally one telephone company employee told me that it was a problem related to the Three Way Calling feature. It used to be you had to request that this be on your phone line, but when they made it available without subscription, to anyone who would punch in the correct code, many people started having the problems mentioned above. In most areas where they offer this service, they also have a Three Way Calling BLOCK that you can put on your phone line. When we requested this, it is FREE, it seemed to take care of the problems. The Block is NOT available in ALL areas, but check with your operator and push for it. If you don't need the service, have it blocked & perhaps that will help your phone problems too. POST IT...by your telephone.

RECIPE WEB SITES

Here are some of my all time favorite recipe web sites. Some have been mentioned in previous issues, but with Christmas coming faster than you think, I thought it might be helpful to bring these to your attention. First of all, in my last issue I inadvertently put in the Real Food for Real People web site in incorrectly. The correct address is http://realfood.hypermart.net . Cookie Recipes by category (drop, bar, Christmas, and much more) galore at www.cookierecipe.com/default.asp.  Everyone's favorite TV News Cook, Mr. Food takes fancy recipes and makes them easy at www.mrfood.com/. My favorite spice company's site at www.mccormick.com/ for recipes of all kinds. Often the recipes that come from brand name companies are some of the best so check out www.pillsbury.com/, www.kraftfoods.com/index.cgi , & www.hersheys.com/homepage.html. For copycat restaurant recipes, the Marie Callendar ones were provided by yours truly, check out www.copykat.com/.  Better Homes & Gardens has recipes and much more at www.bhglive.com.  Flora's Kitchen has links to many other recipe sites at www.deter.com/flora/kitchen.html. And two that I have mentioned before that have recipes, plus money saving & simple living tips are www.stretcher.com and http://members.aol.com/Dsimple/index.html. Even if you are on an email ONLY provider, check with a friend who has internet access and find the sites that offer email newsletters like this one, or recipes every day, or weekly. Just because you are on an only email system, doesn't mean you can't take advantage of the internet. Angie in Vaufreuil, Quebec, Canada (which makes her my first out of country feedback email :)) sent along 3 wonderful sites to share also. Check them out at www.mymenus.com, www.compucook.com, and www.meals.com. POST IT...by your computer.

FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK

RE: PMS and Calcium (Sept. 15th, 1998 issue)

Beth B. sent me a reminder that often certain vitamins and supplements will hinder absorption if taken in certain combinations. There are too many of those combinations to go through here, but it is always best if you get the vitamins/minerals from natural food sources, rather than in pills/capsules, if at all possible.

RE: Clinton Quotes (Sept. 1st & 15th, 1998 issues)

Someone sent me another Clinton quote which goes as follows: "The other thing we have to do is to take seriously the role in this problem of...older men who prey on underage women...There are consequences to decisions and...one way or the other, people always wind up being held accountable." --Clinton, June 13, 1996, in a speech endorsing a national effort against teen pregnancy, from U. S. News and World Report, September 21, 1998.

NOTE: If anyone hears a quote that is purportedly from Starr on 60 Minutes speaking about not bring pornography to the American people, etc, both Starr and 60 Minutes has confirmed that the quote is a hoax & was never said by Starr.

JOKE

In honor of the homerun race, a baseball one.

"I was tossing balls to my 7-year-old son so that he could practice his hitting. When he complained that the vibrations of his aluminum bat were stinging his hands, I suggested we get him a new one. He agreed, then said, 'You know, Dad, they're making them out of wood now.'" --Contributed to Reader's Digest by Jim Whitright
