This is a wonderful opportunity to remind your pastor, minister, chaplain, or other clergy, just how much they are appreciated. For a tremendous number of ideas check out www.clergy.org where they also have a Pastor of the Year essay contest you can enter your pastor in by email. The winner receives a trip for 2 to Israel, but hurry, the deadline is Sept. 30th. Focus on the Family 1-800-A-Family or www.fotf.org also has a Planning Guide for the month for a nominal fee of $3, and I imagine they will have some material on their web site about it. Even if it is just a simple little gift, or taking them out to lunch, it means so much. The thank you letters from pastors talking about the surprises their congregation had for them bring tears to your eyes. POST IT...on your calendar. MUSICAL INSTRUMENT SAVINGS The Dollar Stretcher web site, www.stretcher.com, has a great article on saving money by purchasing used musical instruments. You can check it out by going to www.stretcher.com/stories/980817b.htm. And while you are at it, don't forget to look into all the rest of his wonderful money saving ideas. Often you would save money purchasing a used instrument rather than renting one. And speaking from experience (flute), it is a lot cheaper to have something re-padded and reconditioned than to buy a new or used instrument. POST IT...by your computer. NEW NANCY DREW AND OTHER MYSTERIES Some of you readers may remember when I told you over a year ago about the mini-mystery of the day web site at www.thecase.com. Well, they have come up with something for the Nancy Drew fans too. They now have Nancy Drew mysteries where you get a piece of the puzzle a week at a time, with a new mystery each month. Even if you don't have internet access (Juno users), you can still have a friend get on the web site for you and plug in your email address to have the mysteries sent to your email address. Great for kids. POST IT...on your computer. PMS AND CALCIUM Boy, if this one is as easy as it sounds...or should I say, "Girl, if this one is as easy as it sounds"! :) Researchers at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital found that getting enough calcium throughout the month actually "cut the overall severity of PMS symptoms by 48%". The women took 4 calcium carbonate tablets(Tums) each day for 3 months, 1200 mg, roughly the equivalent of 4 glasses of skim milk (BTW the less fat in milk, the more calcium, so skim has more calcium than whole). Some of the symptoms helped by calcium: mood swings, depression, sadness, tension/irritability, anxiety/nervousness, anger/aggression, crying spells, swelling, tenderness, bloating, aches/pains, backache, headache, appetite changes/cravings. While it didn't work for all women, it did work well for a very significant number of the subjects. To read more about it, IF they still have it archived, check it out at www.abcnews.com/sections/living/HealthyWoman/healthywoman.html and look for the article called, "The Ultimate PMS Pill?". The symptoms it didn't help that are common are insomnia and fatigue. Check with your doctor before making any decisions. POST IT...on your shopping list, by your Dr's number, and by your computer. CAKES IN JARS? Yes, Cakes in Jars, although some of you might call them Quick Breads. Kaylin Cherry has a FANTASTIC web site (actually she has more than one, check out her links) called Real Food for Real People at www.realfood.hypermart.net. At her web site you can check out two of her Cakes in Jars recipes, Carrot-Raisin Jar Bread and Chocolate Jar Cake. Theses are quick breads or cakes that you pour into the 1 pt canning jars and will keep up to a year if sealed correctly. What a neat Christmas present that would be for friends. A recipe fills 6 jars. You could do them way ahead of time and beat the Christmas rush, if you can resist eating them before then! She has many more recipes and also has a recipe a day email service. You can either sign up by going to her web site OR (ATTN Juno folk) send a blank email to realfood-on@mail-list.com. She has all kinds of recipes not JUST the cakes in jars. You can check out the Banana Bread in a Jar recipe at the dollar stretcher site www.stretcher.com. She also has a recipe book about jar cakes, send $5 to Kaylin Cherry, RE: Real Food for Real People-Great Jar Cakes, 11041 Lake Hazel Rd, Boise, ID 83709. POST IT...by your computer, by your stamps, and in your recipe box. RECIPE NOTES BTW folks, Christmas time probably finds most of us cooking/baking a lot more than usual. So this would be a great time to go through your cookbooks and recipe boxes. Toss out those recipes you have had for years & never tried, give the cookbooks you never use to someone else. If you have a cookbook with only a few recipes that you use, either tear them out or copy them & put them in your recipe box. Whenever you see a recipe that you like, instead of just sticking it into the box. Leave it tucked near, but not IN the recipe box. Try it and if you like it, stick it in the box. If you don't, then toss it. Be realistic. For example, I know that the more steps a recipe has the less likely I am to do it. I don't mind a lot of ingredients, just not a lot of steps, bowls, utensils, taking in & out of the oven, etc. So I know better than to even cut it out. Some of the best recipes I have ever made have been found in product ads. POST IT...near your recipe box. MIX-N-MATCH RECIPES Well, this may not be new, but it is new to me. Debi Taylor-Hough of the Simple Living web site http://members.aol.com/Dsimple/index.html and the Simple Times email newsletter (to subscribe send an email to hub@xc.org and in the message part put, nothing more and nothing less than: subscribe simple-times) has done it again. She has a collection of Mix-n-Match recipes using common ingredients-a great way to use up leftovers. Cooking this way is easy and you may surprise yourself with a dish that will become a family favorite. Let me explain. For example, if you go to the Skillet Meal section (other sections include soup, quiche, casseroles, dessert, breads, muffins, cookies), you will find directions to choose ONE food from EACH of the following groups: Bread or Cereal 1C raw (i.e. macaroni, rice, pasta), Sauce 1can soup plus 1 1/2 cans milk, broth or water (i.e. cream soups, tomato soups, french onion soup), Protein 1 lb or 1C cooked (i.e. ground beef, chicken, tuna), Vegetables 1 1/2-2C canned, cooked, or raw i.e. carrots, peas, mixed), and then 1/2-1C Cheese. Each group has a whole list of possibilities not just the few examples I have room for here. Then she gives you the instructions for how to put it all together to make a great skillet meal. The only advice I would add is to keep track of what you put in so you can repeat it if it is a huge hit (the best chili I ever made, & got the most compliments on was a little bit of this & that because I thought I had ingredients that I didn't; I couldn't repeat it if I tried). This is a GREAT idea for those times when you realize you don't have a particular ingredient to come up with something completely different. To order the Mix-n-Match Recipes booklet send $5 to Mix-n-Match Recipes, Simple Pleasures Press, P. O. Box 941, Auburn, WA 98071-0941. POST IT...by your stamps. FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK-FEEDBACK ##RE: Article on Road Rage-Cathy S. wrote to say that I shouldn't tell people to call 911 for an aggressive driver. While I never meant it to sound that way, it does bear clarifying. You should only call 911 if it is a life or death situation. If a person is trying to carjack you, force you off the road, or brandishing a weapon, THEN call 911. If you simply see a person that is weaving or driving aggressively, then you should call the NON-emergency number. POST IT....(the non-emergency number) by your car phone. ##RE: Clinton Quote-It has come to my attention that ONE of the Clinton quotes in the last issue was a little off, although the sentiment remains. The incorrect quote from last issue was..."If a President lies he should step down (resign)." The quote should actually read, "If a president of the United States ever lied to the American people, he should resign." The other quote is correct to the best of my knowledge. Both quotes from then U. S. Congressional candidate, now President Clinton, talking about President Nixon. From the Arkansas Gazette(8/8/74). POST IT...near your congressman's phone number/email address, if desired. JOKE Ravi Zacharias told this story during his radio show. Mohammed Ali was traveling in an airplane during the height of his career when the aircraft hit "moderate turbulence", which means it was getting a little rough. The pilot asked everyone to buckle their seat belts & remain in their seats. The stewardess noticed that everyone except Ali had buckled their seat belt. She went over & asked him politely to please buckle his seat belt. He replied, "Superman don't need no seat belt." Without missing a beat, the stewardess replied, "Superman don't need no airplane either." QUOTE "The recklessness of it all is breathtaking. It's hard to know which to do first: scream, cry or take a shower. ---From an editorial in the Philadelphia Daily News commenting on the President's behavior BEFORE Starr's report came out! All for this issue. Be sure to send me an email at Make-A-Note@worldnet.att.net to comment about the contents of the newsletters, make suggestions for improvement or subjects you would like to see covered.
