NOTE: Each entry has a suggested "POST IT..." location at the end. We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Air Quality CheckMost news stations will now issue an Air Quality Index report, or AQI for short, along with their weather. But since most of our news comes from major metropolitan areas, the AQI for them, may not be the same for the suburbs. Here is a site that enables you to check things out in a little more detail. http://www.epa.gov/cgi-bin/airnow.cgi?MapDisplay=FORECAST How much detail depends on the particular area, but you can click on the links near you to see what is available. For example, we are near DC, but, for whatever reason, the air in our area tends to be a lot better than the reports coming out of DC. For those of you with family members who are sensitive to respiratory problems, this is a good thing to keep an eye on. POST IT...on your computer. * * * * * * * Severe Schedule for Cars?Want your car to last longer than the average? Make sure that you are investing in the maintenance that it needs. And it IS an investment...pay a little now, or a lot later to buy a car sooner than you need to. Most cars now have maintenance schedules for "normal" driving conditions and "severe". Some might just glance at the schedules & assume they are in the normal category. But did you know that "severe" conditions also include driving with a lot of short trips, and stops & starts? For most of us that IS normal every day driving. So double check your manual and follow the correct maintenance schedule. You may be able to put off buying a new car a few years. Here's another idea to keep up on the required maintenance...Make a copy of the maintenance schedule in your manual, then pencil in the date & mileage next to the maintenance that you had done. Right after that in parentheses, put the date/mileage that the job is due to be done again. POST IT...in your car's manual. * * * * * * * Radioactive ProtectionThe people who know me personally would probably tell you that while I am not a worrier, I do believe in being prepared. With terrorism at an all time high, the risk of an radioactive event, while I believe slim, is still definitely higher than it used to be. And I think most would say that the bigger the city you live in, the higher the risk. One way that you can be prepared to protect yourself is to keep potassium iodide tablets on hand. Very similar to what you get in iodized table salt, this over-the-counter product can protect you from certain types of radiation dangers. For more information about these pills, and a place to order them, go to... http://www.nukepills.com If I lived in the middle of a rural area, I probably wouldn't buy them. But living near a large city, I am considering it. And if you think I'm being paranoid, you should know that recent news stories have reported that many government agencies have made massive purchases in recent days, and that the pills have been issued to nuclear power plant workers for years. At only $10/pack of 14, they are very reasonably priced. But as always, when it comes to your health, be sure to check with your own doctor. You can also order by phone at 1-866-283-3986 or email at info@nukepills.com, and they do international shipments also. Do I think I'll ever need them? Probably not, but it never hurts to be prepared. POST IT...on your computer or by your phone. * * * * * * * Dealer StickersDoes it seem like the dealer stickers/stamps on cars are getting bigger & bigger? I may love the dealer that I use, but I figure that I pay enough for the car that I don't need to become a moving billboard for the guy! But you do have a choice with most dealers. When we bought our last two cars, we asked that they NOT put the dealer stickers on them. On the second one, they forgot, but the salesman asked if I wanted it removed and 5 min. later it was. So if it looks like the writing is painted on, then it might be easily removed. It might be more difficult if it is more like an old-fashioned sticker. So ask your dealer, even if it has been a while since you bought the car. It never hurts to ask. POST IT...in the yellow pages under "Automobile Dealers". * * * * * * * Recipe: Sugar Shell Surprise (w/cookbook update)Our August 1st, 2000 Make a Note (see info below for retrieving back issues) had a recipe & an article on a great cookbook called "A Dinner a Day". It is now out of print, but a few are still available from Amazon and www.ecookbooks.com. We told you that 2 more cookbooks were in the works using the same great format (see the back issue). They have been delayed, but they now believe the first one will be out in the fall, and another the following year. In the meantime, here's a recipe from the first book to whet your appetite ... Preheat oven to 375F. Divide 18 oz pkg of sugar cookie dough into 4 sections. Roll each section flat into a 4" round. Turn a large 6 cup muffin tin upside down and grease 4 of the backs. Press dough over outside of cups to form shells. Back until golden, about 7 min. Remove from oven & let cool. In the meantime, rinse 1pt fresh raspberries (might also work with other berries), drain on paper towels, & refrigerate until ready to use. Carefully lift shells from tin, fill them with berries, top with dollop of whipped cream, and drizzle with raspberry preserves for garnish. POST IT...on your shopping list & in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: Summer Reminders (Ultimate Moving Checklist, List of Summer Activities, Flea Protection...)We have 3 issues to recommend for your summer reading. First, one of our most popular Bonus Pages is our ULTIMATE Moving Checklist. Since most people move during the summer, thought I'd remind you of this resource that could make your move less stressful. Another issue you might want to check out is August 15th, 2000 issue, where we point you in the direction of a great list of "200+ Ideas for Summertime Fun". But note that when you follow the directions on the back issue, click on "Family Fun" instead of "Children". The web site has changed a bit since the article was written. This is the list to print out & keep on hand whenever the word "bored" comes out of your child's mouth. Just tell them to get their list out & get busy. Our February 21st, 2001 issue will give you a tip on a spot-on flea product that is very inexpensive, but seems to work as well as the pricier products, AND gives you a source for the product. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Final WordsJOKE (For all those nap lovers out there)"I think my dad's getting old," said John. "Why do you say that?," said Mary. John said, "It takes him longer to rest up than it does to get tired!"
