So I did my homework & found the cheapest plan with the most coverage I could find. You can buy a prepaid phone set from ATT for $80-$105. This includes the phone, charger, ear piece, and $50 worth of talk time. The $80 price can be found at places like convenience stores that sell the set & the directions are pretty clear. But if you don't mind paying an extra $20, the people at ATT stores will set it all up & make sure you understand it all too. After that you just have to buy a minimum of $10 worth of minute credit every 45 days. If you are going on a trip & know you will be using it more often, then you can buy extra credit minutes that will save you more money/minute. For more info, check your local business pages for ATT Wireless, or go to http://www.attws.com Scroll down to "View all Plans", enter in your zip, then scroll down to "PrePaid". You can use the web site to check for the nearest ATT store. This is also an ideal phone for teens to have in case of emergency. If you renew before your 45 days expire, then any leftover minutes continue to accumulate. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * More Cell Battery LifeWhile we're on the subject...it wasn't in the manual, but support people at Nokia and ATT told me that the first time I charge a new battery, I should do it for 24 hours straight. Then I should let the battery go completely dead before charging again, then charge for another 24 hours, let it go dead, and then charge as I like after that. They said that this will help the battery to last longer & hold a charge longer. In a way it might be explained this way, imagine if the first time you use a drinking glass, that whatever level you fill it to, that no matter how much you use it after that you can only fill it to where you filled it the first time. Now I've heard some say that this applies to other rechargeable batteries as well, but you should check with the manufacturer for their specific recommendations. POST IT...with your spare battery, or in your cell phone case. * * * * * * * Free American Girl BookFor those of you with daughters, grand-daughters, or little friends who are American Girl doll fans, this one is for you. POST IT...near your computer, on your calendar & shopping list. * * * * * * * National Zoo TipsMany of you visiting Washington, DC, might plan on enjoying a day at the Smithsonian's National Zoo. This is a magnificent zoo, and better yet, the admission is free. Here are some tips to get the most out of your visit there. Many don't realize that the zoo grounds open at 6am, it is only the buildings that don't open until 10am. Plan on arriving about 7-8am to start your visit. Early in the morning you will pretty much have the place to yourself except for a few joggers, and numerous zoo keepers and volunteers going out of their way to answer any questions you might have. The animals are usually alert, out in plain sight, and because it is quiet they often come right up to where you are standing near their cage. If it is the summer time, you will also have cooler viewing in the morning hours. It is better to check the zoo out in a circle pattern. By the time you have seen all the outside exhibits, it will be 10am and the exhibit buildings will open. Make another loop just hitting the buildings. The zoo will be crowded by now, but you can check out some of the training demos, and still be off the grounds by around noon, with time to check out some of DC's other tourist spots. Since the vendors don't start until 10am, be sure to take snacks & drinks along with you. It is always more interesting to visit a place that you know a little about, so check out the zoo's web site below, along with their animal cams & other useful info... http://natzoo.si.edu/ If you have cable & get the Animal Planet channel, you might also want to watch "Total Zoo" which is a series that follows the keepers, vets, & animals at the National Zoo. For more info on this program go to http://animal.discovery.com/atoz/totalzoo.html POST IT...with your DC tourist info, or in the yellow pages under "Travel Agent". * * * * * * * Recipe: Grad Party IdeasHere are some ideas for those grad parties coming up this month. Too simple to be considered official "recipes". :-) Make cupcakes in the same color of cake, as the color of their caps. Usually white or black (chocolate). After cooling, peel off any papers and turn the cupcakes upside down on a serving tray. Frost in the color of the caps, take a square of plain chocolate candy bar and balance on top of the (bottom of the) cupcake. If desired frost before placing on the cupcake. Make a small mound of frosting right in the middle & place a thin piece of licorice whip in place as a "tassel". The frosting would be more time consuming, so you might consider just doing a chocolate cupcake, frost it, then place a piece of unfrosted chocolate bar on top with a dollop of frosting to hold the "tassel" in place. For diploma snacks, take pieces of plain white bread and roll flat with a rolling pin. Dust with cinnamon & sugar, then spread with apple pie filling (make sure to mash any large pieces of apple). Roll into a diploma shape and tie with a piece of licorice whip. You can also roll up slices of white cheese & ham & tie with a strip of celery. And finally you can roll up cooked hot dogs with flattened plain white bread and tie with a piece of celery strip. Make a stack with any of the "diploma" treats. POST IT...with your grad cards, or in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: May 1st, 1999 Issue (Scholarship Info, Arthritis Helps, Find Old Classmates, Cool Summer Dessert, and more)Go to this back issue to find out how to finance those college years after the parties are over. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Final WordsJOKE (from Geoff C.)Five cannibals get appointed as engineers in a defense company. During the welcoming ceremony the boss says, "You're all part of our team now. You can earn good money here, and you can go to the cafeteria for something to eat. So please don't trouble any of the other employees." The cannibals promised. Four weeks later the boss returns and says, "You're all working very hard, and I'm very satisfied with all of you. However, one of our janitors has disappeared. Do any of you know what happened to him?" The cannibals all shake their heads no. After the boss has left, the leader of the cannibals says to the others, "Which of you fools ate the janitor?" A hand raises hesitantly, to which the leader of the cannibals replies, "You fool! For four weeks we've been eating Team Leaders, Supervisors and Project Managers and no one noticed anything, and you have to go and eat the janitor!" QUOTE"Some may worry that it is somehow undiplomatic or impolite to speak the language of right and wrong. I disagree. By confronting evil and lawless regimes, we do not create a problem, we reveal a problem." ---US President George W. Bush, at West Point Cadet Graduation Ceremony, June 2002 * * * * * * * Sponsorship InformationIf you are interested in helping to sponsor our ezine, or others in the Dollar Stretcher family, drop an email requesting additional info to: mailto:marketing@stretcher.com?subject=MAN.
