So here's the info to help make those holiday get-togethers a little more interesting. You can find the Christmas Carol game on our web site at http://home.att.net/~make-a-note/index.htm Once there, click on Bonus Page, and then scroll down to the Christmas game. The answers are at the separate link on the Bonus Page. I have found the links below to take you to trivia games that are very similar to the ones on our website. In fact many have the same questions, but in a much nicer format. This way you can use them right away.
POST IT...on your shopping list for Christmas parties or with your Christmas cards. * * * * * * * Kids' News OnlineFor those of you familiar with God's World News sheets for kids, they have finally gone online. They do not have the entire newspaper available, but do have 2 breaking news stories for each of the age divisions. So if you subscribe & would like a little update, or if you don't subscribe & would like a source of age appropriate news stories, then this site is for you. Go to http://www.gwnews.com. They also have book recommendations & articles to encourage educators in any field. POST IT...near your computer & on your school bulletin boards. * * * * * * * Red Cross UpdateBowing to pressure from a vocal public, the Red Cross has now decided to give all the funds designated for Sept. 11th victims to the same. While I did receive emails in support of our position, I also received quite a few opposed. In response to other opposed readers I offer you this...a friend comes to you & asks you for money for a particular family in difficulty because of a particular event. You give the money, but a few weeks later you find out the friend decided to hold onto the money for future families, or gave the money to another family, or decided to use it for gas for his car as he drove to make the rest of the donations to the original family...how would you feel? I think most people would have at least wanted to be consulted first about the change in how their money was used. The Red Cross unfortunately seems to have a history of things like this, check out this article Red Cross Has Pattern Of Diverting Donations from the Washington Post. POST IT...by your computer. * * * * * * * Great Deals on Christmas GreeneryIf you are looking for a great source for VERY reasonably priced Christmas centerpieces or wreaths, look no farther than the L. L. Bean HOME Holiday Gifts catalog. How about a 19"x13" balsam centerpiece with pinecones, red berries, red bow & 3 candles for only $29.50. Or a 27"x13" with 5 candles for only $39.50. This is a wonderful deal and a beautiful family gift for anyone on your list. Even with shipping you are getting so much more than you can usually get for the money with your florist. They begin shipping on 11/25 (sorry not to APO's or international addresses) and in the past ours have continued looking good well into January. The smell of Christmas trees, the candlelight...how could you go wrong. Check out their web site at http://www.llbean.com/home or call 1-800-221-4221. They also have round centerpieces, wreaths, garland, & even trees. What a great idea for those who are in dorm, nursing home, or barrack rooms without the space for a tree. Order one for yourself while you are at it. POST IT...on your shopping list. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Recipe: Honduran Meat, Beans, & RiceHere's a good recipe to adapt for that leftover turkey & rice. Brown 1 lb. of chicken or beef chunks (can also use leftover turkey) in a large pot, drain off fat. Add 2C of dried beans (I like using the mixtures) & add water until beans are covered. Add bay leaf & 1/2 tsp salt. Bring to boil, then cook for 2 1/2 hours on low heat, continuing to keep beans covered with water. Take 1C uncooked rice (can use instant) & prepare separately as directed (or you can use 2-3C cooked rice). After beans/meat have cooked for 2 1/2 hours, add 1 medium onion chopped (about 3/4C), remove bay leaf, add rice. Heat through for 5 min. Serve in bowls with grated cheese on top (maybe a little chopped white or green onion for decoration) and tortillas on the side. This is a great meal for a chilly day that will really stick to those ribs, and it is good for you too! POST IT...on your calendar on the day after Thanksgiving, or in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: January 1st, 1999 IssueSo you followed our Christmas Checklist & now you don't know what to do with all that extra time on your hands? As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. "Is that a dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"
