NOTE: Each entry has a suggested "POST IT..." location at the end. We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Red Cross DisappointmentSome of you may have noticed that we have removed the Red Cross donation link from our web site. In case you haven't heard, the Red Cross is now saying that they will not be using all of the September 11th donations FOR September 11th victims, but will be re-directing quite a bit of the money towards "broad-based" needs of the organization. I'm sure many of you are just as disappointed as I am at this choice. I would encourage you to continue to make donations to the Firefighters' & Police Funds, along with the fund for Pentagon families. See our September 19th issue for more information. We will soon be removing the Red Cross info from the back issue also. I am a supporter of the Red Cross and feel they provide a much needed service, but I think they dropped the ball on this one. POST IT...where you can let your friends know about it. * * * * * * * Free Meal for Military at Golden CorralOn a brighter note...To honor our veterans & active duty, Golden Corral restaurants across the country are going to be offering a free meal to veterans/active duty members on Monday, Nov. 12th, ONLY from 5-9pm. Some of the restaurants just said to ask for the free meal, others said you just need to show your ID card. It might be a good idea to show up later in the evening, esp. if you live in a military town. Might be busy earlier. POST IT...on your calendar & forward to all your entitled friends. * * * * * * * Grocery Co-opsThis may be one of the best kept secrets around. A co-op gets a bunch of people together to split a bulk order of something so they can buy directly from the supplier cutting out the grocery store middle man, resulting in huge price savings. Just a quick look at our local co-op's list revealed a big name, top end, frozen entree selling for less than a dollar instead of the usual $3. Co-ops may purchase produce, frozen foods, dairy, canned goods, anything you can find in a grocery store. Some may order weekly & others monthly; some may rotate the companies they order from. Our military readers may be familiar with this concept from the commissary case lot sales, where families will often get together to split cases. If you are looking for a co-op near you, check out this web site http://www.columbia.edu/~jw157/food.coop.html which has contact info by locality. If you are already part of a co-op, check out the other groups' sites which may have suppliers unknown to you. If there isn't a co-op near you, start your own by using the info on the other co-op web sites. This may even make it worthwhile to buy a freezer. Which in most cases will pay for itself quickly if you save $12 or more a month, probably not a problem with a co-op. POST IT...near your computer & shopping list. * * * * * * * "Endurance" & "Voyage of the Dawn Treader"Looking for some great Christmas gifts for the families on your list? Here are a couple of editor recommendations to make things easier. "Endurance", by Alfred Lansing, is an amazingly true adventure story. The story of Ernest Shackleton's 1915 attempt to cross the South Pole on foot. Only 2 months into the journey, their ship is trapped by the ice, eventually crushed, & they are on their own for about 1 1/2 yrs before the time of Gortex, and polypropylene. AND...they didn't lose a single man. This is a book on leadership & survival. It is written so well that you almost shiver when you read about a man falling into the water...& crackling as he crawls out when his clothes instantly freeze. There are other books on this event, but I think that Lansing's version is the superior one. "Voyage of the Dawn Treader" is the latest of Focus on the Family Radio Theatre's productions, out just in time for Christmas. Like listening to the old time radio shows, with beautiful orchestrations, sound effects, and the talents of professional actors. My kids like listening to these programs over & over again. For more information on the other programs available go to http://www.family.org/resources/section.cfm?sid=448&pid=307 These gifts can make those long holiday trips in the car painless. You can also purchase the Radio Theatre productions by calling 1-800-A-FAMILY. If you're a little tight on funds check out http://www.radiotheatre.com/ for times when you can record the programs off a radio station near you. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Recipe: Quick Black Forrest DessertGrease an 8" square glass baking dish. Mix 1/2 box (9 oz) of devil's food cake mix, 1/2C water, 1 egg, and beat until smooth. Pour into your greased baking dish & microwave on medium high (about 75% power on most) for 5 min, turning once. Then microwave on high for 1-2 min or until done. Allow to cool. Combine 1C regular sour cream (no low/no fat here) and 8 oz of READY-TO-EAT vanilla pudding. Mix until smooth, then pour & spread evenly over cake. Top with 21 oz can of cherry pie filling. This is a great one to keep the ingredients on hand for those last minute guests. While I haven't tried it, it might also work well with other flavors of cake or pie filling. POST IT...on your shopping list & in your recipe box. * * * * * * * Back Issue Treasure: Christmas HelpsFor this issue, I'll just like to give you a quick list of back issues that might help you in your Christmas preparations. IF YOU CAN ONLY CHECK OUT ONE, THIS IS IT... Well, this is only a small sampling of our related back issues. If you'd like to read more, just follow the instructions below for particular issues, or go to our web site & do a search under "Christmas". * * * * * * * Final WordsJOKE (From Kyong D. :-)It was the end of the day when I parked my police van in front of the station. As I gathered my equipment, my K-9 partner, Jake, was barking, and I saw a little boy staring in at me. "Is that a dog you got back there?" he asked. "It sure is," I replied. Puzzled, the boy looked at me and then towards the back of the van. Finally he said, "What'd he do?"
