"Stepping Heavenward" Fans

Well, we had such a huge response to a quote alone from this book, that I thought it was time to do an article on the "Prentiss Books". "Stepping Heavenward" is one of those books that always seems to leave a wonderfully positive impression in almost everyone who reads it. One of those books that you make sure to have a copy for yourself, a copy to loan, & a stack to give away to your friends & family. Written in the 1800's, it is a novel in the form of a journal of a woman from her 16th birthday until just before her death. Her struggles as a wife & mother, while written over 100 years ago, are ones that so many of us identify with. This book is available in a very inexpensive paperback form, or you may find yourself wanting a more lasting hardback copy to pass on to your daughter. To read more about this book by Elizabeth Prentiss, go to  "Stepping Heavenward". Now if you have already read this book, then you need to move up to "More Love to Thee", her biography by her husband George Prentiss. This book is very thick & has small print, but is well worth the read. It uses many of her own journal entries, letters to & from friends, & personal remembrances. This was one very special lady. If you order one from Amazon, check to see if your friends would like you to send them the free $5 off coupon they offer for a friend when you order. One of Mrs. Prentiss' special gifts was her attitude about suffering, culminating in a beautiful book of poems on the same subject. The book is called, "Golden Hours", and is only available from Solid Ground Books at solid-ground-books@juno.com or http://www.solid-ground-books.com They also have a nice edition of "Stepping Heavenward". Read them & let me know what you think. POST IT...on your shopping list.

Tinting Windows

For those of you with windows too high up to use curtains/blinds with, windows on doors, or those just tired of being blinded or broiled by the sun at that "time of day", consider tinting. Ask people you know with tinting who they used & if they liked them. Call the companies in the yellow pages & get estimates ( be sure to check them out before calling at the Better Business Bureau http://www.mybbb.org), most companies can give you an estimate on the phone if you have an approximate size. Also ask who handles warranty work, them or the manufacturer (you WANT a company that will stand by its own work). Ask them for addresses they have done, so you can go see their work, at least from the outside. Now ask them the trick question..."Do you have samples?" A good company will not just send you samples, but will ask you what you are trying to do. There are films that just cut heat or light, some that do both. Is privacy a concern? A good tint person will make sure to find out before he recommends any film (and usually it is best to go with their recommendations). A local sports center picked out a film themselves & it only blocked the light not the heat, creating a greenhouse effect that actually made the workout rooms hotter. Once you find someone you trust, have them come out, preferably at the time of day where the problems are the most noticeable & have them give you a solid estimate. Remember to give the tint a good month to "set", it might shift if you rub it too much before then. And if you are looking for someone in the northern Virginia area, I can wholeheartedly recommend TNT Tint at (703)239-2460. So beat the heat, fading, & other problems with tinting; most of the time you can hardly tell (visually) the tint is there.

Helps for Reservists/Guardsmen

Okay, a lot of reservists & guardsmen are being called up and this can create a real financial burden for people used to higher civilian salaries. But there is help. For example, did you know that your creditors, once they are notified that you have been called up to active duty can only charge you a maximum of 6% interest? That goes for mortgages, car loans, & credit card debt. Some employers will make up the difference in salary, or at least let you keep benefits while you are on active duty also. If your company doesn't have this policy, what a wonderful thing to suggest whether you would be affected or not. HSLDA is also starting a fund to help those struggling financial in this situation; for more info, go to http://www.hslda.org  And for more information on all the benefits reservists/guardsmen are entitled to, go to

http://www.defenselink.mil/specials/Relief_Act/  and the same w/this ending... Relief_Act_Revision.

Recipe: Pumpkin Bread

Combine 1 1/2C sugar, 1/2C oil, 2 eggs, 1C PUMPKIN (not pumpkin pie mix), and 1/2C water. Then sprinkle the following in order over the mixture above...1 2/3C flour, 1 tsp baking soda, 3/4 tsp salt, 1/4 tsp baking powder, 1/2 tsp each of cinnamon, nutmeg, & ground cloves (or 1 1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice can be substituted for the last 3 ingredients) and mix all together. You can also add 1/2C of either chopped nuts, raisins, chopped dates, or even better in appearance & flavor, craisins (dried cranberries). If you use raisins/craisins be sure to soak overnight in water for added moistness. Place mix in oiled Bundt pan. Bake for 60-80 min at 325 degrees. Done when knife inserted in middle comes out clean. POST IT...in your recipe box or better yet, make a batch for your pastor (OCTOBER IS CLERGY APPRECIATION MONTH...DON'T FORGET! :-).

Back Issue Treasure: September 15th, 1999

There has been a lot of talk these days about being prepared, but it is difficult to be prepared with so many unknown factors to consider. I will tell you that even with the recent incidents of anthrax, your odds of winning the lottery are greater than of getting anthrax. But you should continue to listen to the experts & take their advice & not panic. One of the things they have recommended is preparing as you would for a hurricane, which is why I recommended this back issue. It has something to help you prepare in just that fashion. You can also find songs to help your children learn the names of the disciples & the 10 commandments. The link between exercise & water is also discussed, along with homeschool ezines, and ways to avoid ATM fees. So check it out by following the directions below.

JOKE (From Kyong D. :-)

"We Had spent the day moving from our farmhouse into our new house in town. Early the next morning, our 3-year-old ran into our bedroom to wake us up. I dressed him and told him to play in the yard and to quit bothering us. About 20 minutes later, he came running back. "Mommy, Mommy," he exclaimed, "everybody has doorbells - and they all work!"

"It's the friends you can call up at 4 A. M. that matter."
