We recommend that you print out the ezine, cut out each entry, & post it in these locations to make it easier for you to find when you need it. And if you like what you read, be sure to pass it on to someone else who can use it. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Flu & VaccineWell, if what we have just experienced is any indication, this is going to be a bad flu year. We are a pretty healthy family & yet we ended up with 7-10 days, depending on the family member, of very high fever w/night sweats, horrible body-wracking cough, lack of appetite & energy. In fact in the case of one family member it actually went into pneumonia & they are in the hospital for 5-6 days, as I type (which explains why there will be a delay in posting this current issue to our web site). It has been a long time since I saw a flu this bad & we are hearing of more & more cases around the country from our friends. I would encourage you, especially if you are elderly or in poor health, to speak with your doctor about getting the flu shot this year. Also it would be wise to avoid places where you might come in contact with those with the flu. You might also consider stocking up on your cold remedies (traditional or alternative) AND having back up babysitters for special functions if your sitter becomes ill. Now some of you are probably saying that you WOULD get the shot, if only you could FIND the shot. The CDC has a hotline number to find vaccine in your area. Call 1-800-232-2522, give them your county & state & they will give you any info they have on where & when the vaccine is available. But in our case it wasn't available in our county, or in the adjoining one. But keep calling & checking for the latest info. POST IT...by your phone. * * * * * * * Vitamins & When to Take ThemSome of you would like to take vitamins but you experience upset stomachs. Some would like to give them to your children, but it seems to make the children "hyper". Here are some tips that might be helpful. For children, try to avoid the vitamins with additives or artificial sweeteners, our commercial favorite are the Sesame Street Vitamins w/Minerals. You might also try giving the children the vitamins at night just before they brush their teeth, so that the "hyperactivity" will pass by morning. In some cases this might make the children not sleep well, but in our kids' case they sleep just fine. Taking them at night might also be helpful for those adults who experience stomach upset. Again, you might sleep through the discomfort. If you are an adult & the adult vitamins upset your stomach, then try taking the children's vitamins, one in the morning & one at night. A OB/GYN in our area suggested this to his pregnant patients who couldn't handle the regular vitamins. And as always in cases of health, be sure to check with your doctor about these suggestions. POST IT...on your shopping list. * * * * * * * Getting Rid of Cordless Phone StaticWe recently began experiencing slower connect speeds on a particular phone line when we used the computer, & static when we used the phone. The phone company technician explained that cordless phones tend to build up static electricity, which can be the cause of the problem. To remedy this situation, unplug everything in the room from the phone jacks and electrical outlets. Let sit for 10 min, or even better, overnight. Then plug everything back in, the static electricity should have dissipated. POST IT...on your computer, by the phone, in the phone book on the page with the phone repair number. * * * * * * * IRS Letter on Names & Social Security NumbersSome of you may have already received that scary letter with the IRS return address. And you may have joined me in holding my breath until I was sure it wasn't notice of an audit. Apparently the IRS & Social Security system have recently put a computer system into operation that compares info on tax returns with the social security info. Many of us wives distinctly remember turning in the form when we got married to change the SS account to our married names, have even received mailings to our married names from the SSA, but NOW they are telling us the accounts are still in our maiden names & need to be fixed before we file our next tax return. The easiest way to fix this, if you get a letter like this is to call the SSA number listed, request the name change form & fill it out. They said it should be fixed within 24 hours of receipt of the form. POST IT...with your tax information. * * * * * * * Clinical TrialsIf you have any type of medical condition there is probably a clinical trial out there for you. Even if you are healthy, there are trials for things like flu preventatives. You could help with medical breakthroughs & in some cases even get paid to do it. Usually all of your medical visits & treatment are covered as well. The Trial Pages Web Site lists trials for just about any condition you can think of. Check it out at http://www.trialpages.com/DefaultMain.asp POST IT...in your medical dictionary & on your computer. * * * * * * * "Coffee Can" Pumpkin Nut Bread RecipeThis is a nice one to make for company to take home with them, or for hostess gifts...that's if you can bear to part with them once you have tasted this delicious bread. Preheat oven to 350. Beat 4 eggs well, then add 3C sugar, 2 sticks butter/margarine, 1 tsp cinnamon, 2/3C water, 2C pumpkin (1 small can), 1 tblsp vanilla, 1 tsp baking soda, 1 tsp salt, 1C raisins (soaked in warm water until plump), 1C chopped nuts (walnuts or pecans are fine), 3 1/2C flour, 1 tsp nutmeg. Mix all together well. Divide evenly into 3 greased empty one pound coffee cans. Bake 1 1/4 hour or until browned on top. Let cool for 15 min, then firmly tap the sides of the cans as you turn them, then pop bread out. Use a knife on the sides if it looks like it is sticking. If desired, dust with powdered sugar before wrapping as a gift. Cool completely before wrapping. Delicious while still warm. He said, 'Call for back-up.'" * * * * * * * QUOTE (For the Election Debate)"No government can be long secure without a formidable opposition." --Benjamin Disraeli 1804-1881 Editor's Note: In light of all the "opposition" we are experiencing on both sides of the aisle, I'd say we should be in pretty good shape. :-) * * * * * * * AT&T's Community PortAT&T has a site about WorldNet members, like us, who have created their own personal web pages.
