EDITOR'S NOTE
Please note that my FEEDBACK EMAIL ADDRESS has changed. It is now make-a-note@worldnet.att.net. Looks like the world fared well for Y2K, w/the exception of a few computers that didn't prepare. So if nothing else, you are well prepared for nature's storms. :-) So welcome to the next thousand years. Please be sure to let me know what you would like to see in coming issues, what articles were helpful, and which weren't. Remember it is your feedback that helps make this the ezine it is.

God Bless, Sharon

FLU/COLD TIPS
With the flu hitting everyone a little harder this year, there are several things you can do to help limit your chances of contagion. One of the best things you can do, especially with kids is WASH YOUR HANDS. Buy some of the smaller bottles of waterless soap, there are many generic brands now available, and keep a bottle in your car, in your purse/pocket, at the office, and even in your bathroom. Sometimes kids might not want to take the time to wash their hands with regular soap, but can squirt & run with the waterless soap. For the older kids, give them a bottle to put in their backpack/desk. Use the soap whenever you go to the bathroom, come out of a public place, or have coughed/sneezed into your hands, before you eat. We took a bottle & used it often at an amusement park (think about the germ possibilities) and for once we didn't get sick a few days later. Teach kids to keep their hands away from their faces, and for the younger children, faces away from things. Depending on which study you read/believe, you might also want to take extra vitamin C, zinc lozenges, or Echinacea, not to prevent getting a cold, but to shorten the duration & lessen the symptoms. And remember that many of the symptoms are signs that your body is fighting the cold/flu, so don't be so quick to medicate a fever, cough, runny nose, etc. Check with your doctor for the best route to take. But always drink plenty of fluids. POST IT...on your fridge.

FREE INTERNET PHONE CALLS
This is a site that will help you dial anywhere in the USA, from the USA (hopefully they will expand internationally soon) for FREE. You simply go to the web site, fill out a little info (we did not have a problem with ads after doing this), and then dial the number you want to call. Then you speak to the person through your computer microphone (does your computer have one?) and speakers. There is no charge for this service. For more info you can also check out this news article http://www.wraltv.com/news/wral/techtalk/1999/1110-dialpad/ There is a slight hesitation in transmission, similar to many international calls, but if you are on a tight budget, or like to talk a LOT, then this may be just what the doctor ordered. Go to http://www.dialpad.com/ Let me know how you like it & if there are similar sites for other countries besides the USA for our international readers. POST IT...by your computer.

LUNAR ECLIPSE
Very educational and fun for the whole family. There will be a complete lunar eclipse on January 20th (Thursday). It will begin at 9:30pm (EST) and end at 2:24am(EST). The best show will probably be from 10:01pm (EST)-1:25am (EST). From 11:05pm-12:22am the moom will glow with a dim reddish color. For more info go to http://www.fayettevillenc.com/foto/backyard/index2.shtml POST IT...on your calendar and get those telescopes out.

STRONG-WILLED CHILDREN
For other parents with strong-willed children OR parents who WERE strong-willed children, do I have a book and web site for you. Cynthia Tobias, author of other popular books on learning styles, has written a great little book filled with meat. It is called, appropriately enough, "You Can't Make Me (But I Can Be Persuaded)". I think her book is even more helpful than Dobson's "The Strong-Willed Child", while his point that discipline must be consistent is an important one. Tobias book is a quick read, but VERY helpful in understanding the dynamics involved & suggesting ways to bring out the best in your child and in you. Best price, & a very reasonable one, that I have found is through Christian Book Distributors at $12.55. Call 1-978-977-5000 to order or go to http://www.christianbook.com. And check out the author's web site at http://www.cantmakeme.com or call 1-877-277-5378 for free sample info and other helpful printed material. If you ever get a chance to listen to her, her audio presentations are just as entertaining and helpful as her books are. Also consider asking your library to order a copy. You might have to wait a little longer to read it, but then it will be there for all to use. POST IT...on your shopping list & by your computer.

VOTE.COM WEB SITE
This web site is an easy way to make let your "voice" be heard. You go to the site http://www.vote.com and they have about 5 issues at the time that you can "vote" on. The appropriate people are then notified of your opinion. So you can vote on policies such as gays in the military, then your opinion will be sent to the President and your representatives. You can also see how people have voted across the country, in your state, and in your district. Sometimes the votes are non-political as when they asked if Pete Rose should be in the Hall of Fame, and the votes were sent to the Baseball Commissioner, among others. Last I heard, the White House was limited the number of emails they received from this site, but I haven't heard of any other politician who is refusing the info. After all, no matter how we wish to convey our opinions to our representatives, they should be willing to listen, right?:-) POST IT...by your computer.

BACK ISSUE TREASURE: VALENTINE TREE, BUYING CARS ONLINE, FUNERAL PLANNING, ETC
This January 15th, 1999 featured back issue is loaded with good info. If you are looking for a way to make Valentine's Day more meaningful, then the Valentine's Tree is right up your alley and similar to an Advent calendar, but VERY easy. Start now. Looking for a car before the interest rates go up again? This issue has loads of great sites to help you get the best deal possible (we were able to get a car for 2% over invoice the first time we made use of these sites). Funeral planning isn't something that we look forward to doing, but this is info that should be kept on hand for those difficult times to avoid being scammed when you are most vulnerable. To request this back issue, send an email to make-a-note-issues@xc.org and in the subject or body of the message type in MAN-011 and you should receive the issue promptly. POST IT...by your computer.

JOKE (True Story from Cynthia Tobias' book mentioned above)
"I (Tobias) was once a guest on a call-in radio show in upstate NY. We had been talking about a variety of ways that kids don't fit in school, esp. the highly active & extremely restless SWC (Strong-Willed-Child). I strongly advocated directing the SWC's high energy level instead of trying to temper it. One irate caller disagreed. 'My 2nd-grade daughter is on the move all the time,' he said. 'I make her be still because I tell her that someday she's going to have to a job where she can't just move around any time she wants to.' I just had 2 questions for him. 'Sir, are you calling me from work right now?' 'Yes,' he replied. 'Where are you calling me from?' I inquired. There was a moment's pause before he answered. 'My truck. Never mind--I get your point.'"

QUOTE
"In the real world, you get hired for the very attributes that get you into trouble at school! Think about it. The gift of gab, resourcefulness, thinking outside the lines, taking initiative, being independent, figuring out unique angles, using a vivid imagination--all these traits, many common to the SWC (Strong-Willed-Child), are assets on the job! True, they can make you an inconvenient student in school, but many highly successful people were not 'school material'."
--Cynthia Tobias, "You Can't Make Me! But I can be persuaded)"
