His Life

Any one who has been to Egypt in the last thirty years must remember the theme from the TV program called "Al Elm WalEmaan" or "Science and Faith". The music was composed and performed by Mahmoud Effat.

He is a great musician who comes from a family of performers. When he went to the renowned Institute of Arabic Music in Cairo, he quickly became an instructor. They soon discovered that he does not have a degree in music so as he was teaching he got his bachelor's degree in one year. He then went to study his Master's Degree in music and became the top teacher of Ney in the institute.

He has composed several unique pieces for the ney and created a ney quartet playing classical music on the ney.

He is generally remembered as the best Egyptian ney player in modren times.

His book

Effat wrote a instructional book for the ney in1969. For the longest time it was the only ney method book in Egypt. Since then, there has been multiple instructional ney books but Effat's book has remained one of the great references and it has been reprinted several times. I have scanned the book in different sections. The book is in Arabic but as they say, music is an international language. I will be posting translated text soon. This is the first installment. There is more to the book.

Click on the sections below to download the files. They are in PDF format and you need a Adobe PDF reader to view them.
