The Ney is made from a natural material
and should be handled with care. It should always be kept in a
low humidity place. One way to achieve that is to wrap it in
newspapers or a piece of cloth.
The ney should also be kept oiled on regular
basis. All the teachers I talked to say:
Use light vegetable oil
You should use a table spoon full of oil pour it
in the top
Regular vegetable oil can become rancid inside
the instrument and change the smell. So, the best is supposed to
be unheated extra virgin oil which does not have too much smell.
I have also heard from some instructors that
sesame oil gives the ney nutty flavor and works just as well.
