Casey's Right-To-Die Story Casey Peretti had a promising career as a doctor ahead of him until he developed Guillain-Barre syndrome, a crippling disorder. He left his wife and daughter to attend extensive physical therapy rehab away from home. When he returned, his medical problems worsened. Peretti developed encephalitis, which took the course he feared the most: He fell into a coma. Knowing the symptoms and implications of the disease on himself and his family, Peretti had elected not to have life support. But before he lost consciousness, he did not have time to write a "living will" authorizing the hospital to disconnect artificial respiration. Instead, he asked his sister-in-law, Margo Hughes, to disconnect all life support. This story, emotionally charged, mirrored the front-page news of a woman who elected to end her own life when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. The fallout from Margo's act was wrenching, with Margo in a major conflict with her mother, Lyla, and with Casey's mother, for interfering in a private family matter. The story compellingly explored several sides of a controversial, et highly personal subject. |
