Lyla and Casey met in 1986 at the hospital where they both worked. Casey rented a room in Lyla's house and moved in. During a power outage later that same year their relationship turned romantic. After a lot of convincing on Casey's part they were married and had one child, Katie Peretti. In 1990 Casey contracted encephalitis and died with the help of Lyla's other daughter Margo.
