Anne Sward's Indian Affair

Actress Anne Sward (Lyla Peretti, ATWT) has been a tireless worker on behalf of the American Indian for the past few years. The top project on her busy agenda is the American Indian College Fund, a non-profit corporation that exists to raise funds for the twenty-two tribally controlled colleges that belong to the American Indian Higher Education Consortium. Its objectives are to provide post-secondary aademic and vocational educational opportunities to Indians living on reservations; to develop and maintain programs that preserve and enrich traditional Indian culture and language, and to support community needs such as high school equivalency training, programs to prevent alcohol and substane abuse and economic development.

With recent studies showing that 86 percent of American Indians who attend tribal colleges go on to further their eduation at other institutions while enhancing their pride in their Indian heritage and identity, Sward's cause is certainly a worthy one. Many of the members of the honorary committee of the AICF are well-known. They include Mikhail Baryshnikov, Tom Brokaw, Bill Cosby, Dustin Hoffman, Yoko Ono, and Burt Reynolds. At J. Reuven Silverbird's Native American Restaurant, Anne gathered her friends from ATWT, members of the media and representatives of the tribal colleges to celebrate the announcement of the Amerian Indian College Fund. Entertainment included a performance of Native American music and the cuisine featured something new for most guests -- rattlesnake.

Janine Pease Windy Boy, center, is the president of Little Big Horn College, Crow Agency in Montana. She was gratified at the warm response to Anne's invitation and spoke about the tribal colleges' objectives. Flanking her on the left from ATWT are Count Stovall (Roy Franklin) and Tamara Tunie (Jessica Griffin) and Anne is on the left.

Rarely seen at publicity events, Patricia Bruder (Ellen, ATWT) responded to Anne's call for support. Tamara Tunie and Margaret Reed felt the same way.

Hillary B. Smith (Margo Hughes) was presented with a traditional fany dancer's shawl by tribe members. She donated all of her winnings on the $25,000 PYRAMID ($20,000) to the American Indian College Fund. At her side is Soap Opera Digest feature editor Robert Rourke, whose 10/6 cover story on Anne Sward generated two hundred dollars in donations to the fund.
