Austro-Tai

Introduction

In 1942, Paul K. Benedict proposed a new alignment in South East Asia linking the Austronesian, Kadai, and Tai languages.  In 1966, he gave this grouping the name Austro-Thai, which has since been replaced by Austro-Tai.  In 1975, he expanded the Austro-Tai phylum to include Austronesian, Tai-Kadai, and Miao-Yao (now called Hmong-Mien).  In 1990, Benedict proposed that Austronesian and Japanese-Ryukyuan can be placed in Austro-Japanese, a subgroup of Austro-Kadai, itself a subgroup of Austro-Tai.
