FIRST CEMETERY OF CAMERON
                             CAMERON,LA.

The first cemetery in Cameron was located behind the Hebert Theriot homeplace
on the Henry property. It was started in the early 1800's when very few people
lived in Leesburg as it was called then. The area is just a few yards south
west of the parish courthouse under oak trees which are probably more than one
hundred years old. Hurricane Audrey did extensive damage to the cemetery
leaving only 2 markers and graves. The oldest graves are all in one plot.

In 1946, the skeleton of an airplane pilot still fastened in his seat belt was
found on Broussard Beach. His unidentified remains were buried here. The last
person to be buried here was an accountant who lived in Cameron and did income
tax service for the public. He died in 1950.
