OLD CAMP GROUND CEMETERY (Established in the 1820's) Listing Compiled by Evelyn E. Cole, Roberta B. Doty and Kara D. Cassels March 1992 Annotations by La Vaughn H. "LV" Hayes are preceded by LVH "A memorial to the pioneers of Sugartown (early outpost of southwest Louisiana), whose courage and fortitude helped subdue the historic "neutral territory" of the Sabine-Rio Hondo strip, claimed and contended for by four nations---France, Spain, Mexico, and the United States." ****************************************** Above is the sign which greets you at the entrance of the cemetery located east of Sugartown, LA. The Old Camp Ground Cemetery and nature walk can be reached by turning south off of LA 112 at the Sugartown Pentecostal Church, which is a mile east of Sugartown; then follow the signs. It isn't over a mile. This cemetery is small, and has an old wire-and-post fence around it. Very few of the graves are marked with tombstones. I have been told it is full of graves which were marked with wooden markers which haven't survived the passing of time. The first time I saw the nature walk, it was freshly marked with identification labels for the trees, etc. At this time (1991), the ravages of this year's wet weather and its accompanying flood waters have taken their toll. One of the foot bridges will have to be replaced for the sake of safety, and some fallen trees and/or limbs will have to be moved from the paths. Even with all this, it makes for a nice afternoon's ride to see a bit of history. ================================================================================ BAGGETT, ANDREW B.
