Anthrocon 2003

Wednesday, July 16,2003

Not much to tell about this day other than last minute packing and starting my trip.  I stopped at Columbus, OH for the night. That evening, I entered #warnercafe for a while.  I mentioned that I was about 200 miles closer to Anthrocon than my starting point (Indianapolis).  Dakko Warner then decided to check Mapquest and found that the halfway point of my trip would be just north of Halfway, MD.  Coincidence?

I resumed my drive toward Philadelphia.  Southeast of Pittsburgh, I got on the Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-70,76) just in time to hear on the CB radio about a six-mile traffic backup about ten miles ahead of me due to road construction... oh joy.  The delay wound up taking less time than I expected, but still longer than I wished.  I finally arrived at the Adam's Mark Hotel, the location of Anthrocon, around 5:30 pm, and made my way downstairs to the pre-registration line.  Pretty soon, KT showed up and gave me a key to the room that we would also share with Mycroft Bunny.  After we got registered. I took my stuff up to the room, and then left to find the "Tiny Toon Adventures" (TTA) Fanfic party being hosted by HKUriah at the Marriott hotel.  Among those attending were of course HKUriah, Pepe K., Babs Bunny, Andy Fox, Squirrley, Mycroft Bunny, Leloni Bunny, Murray Mouse, Thorne, John Calcano, and a few others whose names I didn't get.  We watched some TTA cartoons, swapped collectables, and other general silliness.  Thorne had created a banner for the party depicting the alternate-gender images of some of the regulars (l to r:  Moria Mouse, Shawna Skunk, Bobs Bunny, Jane T. Wolf, Thornia Mouse, Leon Bunny, Pipi K., HKWoo, Jojo LaFume).  Near the end of the party, HKUriah held drawings for several prizes, and Pepe K. won the grand prize of a (nearly) complete set of TTA episodes on DVD.

After the party, I drove a couple of the party attendees back to the Adam's Mark, while Mycroft followed me.  Since one of my passengers lived a few blocks away, and the other was staying with him, I gave Mycroft my key and told him what our room number was before taking them home.  When I returned, I met up with Mycroft and KT, and helped Mycroft move his bags and computer in.  After everything had been moved in, and I had my sleeping bag and air mattress set up on the floor, we called it a night.

On the first official day of the con, I went downstairs to the restaurant for breakfast, then went up to the 23rd floor to see if the internet room, con suite, or video room were open yet.  Since none of them had opened yet, I went back downstairs to look around.  The art show and dealer's den weren't scheduled to open until noon, but there were a few fursuiters wandering the hallways, including Kodiak who apparently likes to show off.  At 11:00, opening ceremonies began, hosted by Uncle Kage who was sporting his new haircut, and joined by some of the members of the con staff.  They covered some of the usual topics, including the famous elevators.

After the opening, I saw some more fursuiters wandering the halls (Photo 2, Photo 3, Photo 4).  I went back up to the room to get my laptop out and check my email, and found KT laying on his bed.  Apparently, a previous meal didn't agree with him, so I decided to let him have some peace and quiet instead of firing up the computer.  I went to the internet room, but they were having some network problems, so I couldn't check my mail from there.

Eventually, it was time for the Funday Pawpet Show, so I went down to wait in line.  Soon, it was ten minutes past time for the Pawpet show, and we were still waiting.  Finally, they opened the doors and everyone entered the room.  Uncle Kage started to welcome everyone, but his microphone wasn't working.  They soon got that fixed and he started to introduce Mutt, but instead got Tod Ferret.  Apparently, Mutt couldn't find his collar, and didn't want to come out naked.  He soon found it, got dressed, and came out to host the show.  Rasvar ran through the audience with a wireless mike for Roll Call.  They then started talking about one of the magazines named "Skymall" that was on the plane and that they could have picked a better cover picture than a nosehair trimmer.  KP hosted an Ugly T-shirt contest (Photo 2, Photo 3, Photo 4), which was won by Tibor.  As usual, the prize was "Win Nothing and Like It!"  Shak appeared, but it seems that he had turned into a Coke bottle at the airport.  Herbie and Devin took part in a "Fat Bastard" weigh-in to see who had lost the most weight.  Devin was the runner-up and Chilly Mouse presented him with a can of "Grass Jelly Soda", which she then tasted.  Herbie tried some of the soda next.  The trash can was there to catch his "reaction" to the taste.  Simba had brought in a "Segway", which is a two-wheeled scooter with both wheels on the same axle and the driver rides it standing over the axle. KP gets ready to try riding the Segway. Simba then demonstrates how to ride it, and almost wipes out on some chairs.  Next, Tibor took it on a ride down the steps and through the audience.  Next, Susan Deer and Kage were brought on stage to go through the "Pink Flamingo Challenge".  They had to watch the last scene of a movie while eating, and keep it down.  They both passed the test.  Next was "Spits or Swallows".  The object of this game was to eat and keep down some disgusting food item.  In this case, the food was Durian, which Sue described tasting like "Gummi Bears made from sewage". A few people were willing to try some Durian, with an appropriate receptacle nearby.  Once the challenges were over, Poink got into an altercation with Kage, and it appears that Poink got the upper hand.  Next up was a sing-along with Arthur, followed by the grand finale of a performance of "Bohemian Rhapsody" by Poink, a "few"of his fellow ferret puppets, and Elvis, a live ferret.  (Photo 4, Photo 5, Photo 6, Photo 7, Photo 8, Photo 9).

After the Pawpet show was done, I decided to check out a session of Mad-Libs, hosted by Silverfox.  (Aw, he moved.)  This was a PG-13 set of four stories, starting with "In Elanti's Budoir", followed by "Hangin' at the Singles Bar", "Back at Leroy's Place", and "Elanti's Film Session".  There was supposed to be a fifth story, but time was up way too soon.  The next thing I went to was the "Eye of Argon" reading.  KT had participated in this at Further Confusion 2003, and I was looking forward to seeing how it would go.  We waited for about 20 minutes for the moderator and the script to show up, during which time KT attempted to lead his own version.  After it was determined that it wasn't going to go on, everyone went on to other things.  I wandered up to the video room for a little bit, then went over to the internet room and logged into the #warnercafe.  Richard Fox wanted me to relay a "purchase order" to KT for him to pick up a CD of Karabiner's artwork from Ken Singshow's table.  Luckily, KT was just across the hall in the Con Suite, so the message was quickly delivered.  Eventually, the day started to catch up with me, and it was time to snaf.

On Saturday morning, I went to the video room and watched some of "Totoro" before going to see what else was open.  Soon, it was time for the G-rated session of Mad-Libs.  The stories presented today were:  "Uncle Kage and the Castle of Despair"; Uncle Kage and the Dungeon of Doom"; Uncle Kage and the Conclusion of Amazement".  (Unfinished Stories) (Word Lists) (Completed Stories)  When these were done, there was still some time left so Silverfox went ahead and presented the PG-13 story left over from the previous evening:  Red Riding Hood Do-over -- "Red Redo"  (Unfinished Story) (Word List) (Completed Story).

I went back up to the video room and was able to catch some of the "Animalympics" video tape I had brought in.  Soon it was time for the Animation Industry forum presented by Herbie Bearclaw, who works for Disney studios and has worked on "The Lion King", "Mulan", "The Emperor's New Groove", and several others.

Back downstairs, there were a group of fursuiters having a tickle-fest while waiting for Uncle Kage's Story Hour to begin, and they were soon joined by Spiderman.  Outside was a car that had been turned into an artist's canvas.   (Photo 2, Photo 3, Photo 4, Photo 5)  I'm not sure, but I think that the owner was planning to put the car into the charity auction at Midwest FurFest or some other furry con.

Eventually, they opened the doors for Uncle Kage's Story Hour.  While waiting for it to start, Tony Ringtail stopped by to discuss something with KT.  Soon, Kage appeared on stage and sat down at a small dining table.  His "waiter" soon appeared, took his order, and shortly returned with his wine order.  After a few minutes, (and a few sips of his wine), he realized that this was supposed to be his story hour, and not a sidewalk cafe.  His story subjects included "wine auctioneer", "tuxedo rental", "wine sampling", "snowstorm", "his new haircut", "Mapquest, The Bronx, and a one-eyed woman", "Matrix Reloaded", "his trip to England" (supposedly mentioned at Unclekage.com), "call to Dr. Kay", "Mayfield Clinic", "PHD's", and ended with a story about locking his keys in his car.

Following the Story Hour was the Masquerade, hosted by SK-1.  The participants and / or acts were:
RoxiCat and friend,
Mighty Dragon (photo 2),
Sabat Bear and friend,
Scene cut from Final Fantasy 7,
Creatures of the Night musical,
Sim Polar Bear and friends presentfairy tale,
Magnus Fox,

"Fox on the Run" with Butterscotch Vixen and company,
Jugular Jaguar and a few friends play a game of Twister to the death, and Jugular wins,

Let's Do It, by Fifi,
Vespa with a magic show -- behind the scenes,
Bunny Blue, (photo 2), (photo 3), (photo 4), (photo 5),
And finally, a Group Photo of all the Masquerade participants.

Following the masquerade, the hallway provided some more fursuit photo opportunities.  There was a blue and white... uh... wolf(?), what looks like a black cat (Must've gotten some dust on the lens), a white tiger and hyena, and a very red fox in a red suit.

Later that evening was 2's Comedy Blend at the Laughing Cockatoo Comedy Club, hosted by 2 the Ranting Griffin.  SpazFox was the opening act, and Kage joined in later on.  (I need to get a camera with a zoom lens sometime.)  Then following the comedy was the feature audience participation film, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".

I decided to get a name badge made today, so after walking around the dealers den and checking out some prices and waiting times, I asked John "The Gneech" Robey if he could make one for me.  He said it would be a couple of hours before he could get to it, and that it would most likely be the last one before the con closed.  I wandered around some more until it was time for the furry parade to begin.
Parade01, Parade02, Parade03, Parade04, Parade05, Parade06, Parade07, Parade08, Parade09, Parade10, Parade11, Parade12, Parade13, Parade14, Parade15, Parade16, Parade17, Parade18, Parade19, Parade20, Parade21, Parade22, Parade23, Parade24, Parade25, Parade26, Parade27, Parade28, Parade29, Parade30, Parade31, Parade32, Parade33, Parade34, Parade35, Parade36, Parade37, Parade38, Parade39, Parade40, Parade41, Parade42, Parade43, Parade44, Parade45, Parade46, Parade47, Parade48, Parade49, Parade50, Parade51, Parade52, Parade53, Parade54, Parade55, Parade56, Parade57, Parade58, Parade59, Parade60, Parade61, Parade62, Parade63, Parade64, Parade65, Parade66, Parade67, Parade68, Parade69.
All of the fursuiters gathered in one of the conference rooms for Group photos, (Photo 2, Photo 3), and it was announced that there were 140 fursuiters participating.

After the parade, I went back to the dealers den to check on my con badge, and The Gneech was just finishing it up.  Too soon, it was time for the closing ceremonies (photo 2, photo 3).  They announced that there were 1949 attendees this year, once again making it the world's largest anthropomorphics convention.

That evening, I hung out with the Tiny Toon gang in the Zoo.  (Standing, left to right) hkUriah, Brainsister, Pepe K., Mycroft Bunny.  (Seated, left to right) Squirrley, Thorne, Leloni Bunny, Foxglove, KT, Murray Mouse.  Murray, (center), was kind enough to do a color drawing of my character, Lou Leghorn.  Sketches were also done by Brainsister and KT.

I checked out of the hotel and did a little sightseeing around Philadelphia.  The park in front of Independence Hall, in addition to several other areas, have changed since last year.  There are security fences all over the place, and everyone has to go through screening.  A new home is being built for the Liberty Bell (Photo 2) near it's current location.  I also went to the Philadelphia Mint, but found that tours have to be arranged ahead of time now, so I had to settle for the exhibit at the Federal Reserve Bank.

After the sightseeing was done, I proceeded towards Newark, NJ.

Today, I went to New York to do some sightseeing.  I had also intended to visit a couple of friends, but due to poor planning on my part, they had already made other plans.  When I got on the train in Newark, the weather was cloudy, but otherwise seemed okay.  When I arrived at the station however, it was raining.  After purchasing an umbrella at a nearby shop, I decided to not let the rain ruin my day.  I did quite a bit of walking around and subway riding, and visited the former site of the World Trade Center again. Today, I left New York and started my drive back home.  I didn't really do anything interesting, and stopped for the night at Wheeling, WV.

Another day of just driving from Wheeling to home.
