What is TechPlorations?

Welcome to TechPlorations. Here you will find insightful articles on how technology affects your life. This Web site explores the impact of technology on Culture, Society, Business, and Religion.

Meet Technology

Technology, the word alone conjures up images of misbehaved computers, cell phone intrusions, and geeky weird gizmos. However, technology is much more. Ever since the dawn of the transistor and then its offspring, the integrated circuit, we have seen a revolution in the way our world has adopted technology to assist us in our everyday tasks. This proliferation of technology has attained both a dark, side, and a side of incredible wonders.

Darkness vs. Light

This duality can be readily experienced as we contemplate the Internet, the very vehicle that is conveying these words. On one hand it has brought together people and shrunk our globe. It has exposed us to the joys of exploring other cultures, and opened up a treasure chest of information. On the other hand, it spawned disruptive viruses, gave people access to information on bomb making, created sites that inspired teenagers toward violent acts, and exposed our children to pornography.

Or take the cell phone. Up to only a few years ago, only the rich could afford a 'mobile' phone. Today they are everywhere. Their ringing intrudes on every aspect of our lives, with no peace and quiet in a theatre or even a house of worship. Traffic accidents have been credited to their distracting affects, and rumors have it that their microwave transmit ions can be the cause of brain cancer. On the other hand, cell phones kept children in touch with anxious parents, called loved ones for the last time on 9/11, and assists a woman calling for help on a dark road when her car breaks down.

A Shining Light

The Internet, computers and cell phones comprise just a small part of technology. Our world is full of objects that contain technology and make our lives easier. And each day new ways to apply technology to old models are born. Drugs are discovered through the use of computer molecular modeling, hidden recesses of the human body are imaged in extraordinary clarity that no X-ray machine could ever achieve, Global Positioning devices help lost hikers determine their location with pinpoint accuracy, a feat no trusty compass is capable of, and theatrical plays, movies and television entertain us with their incredible special effects. And each time the US launches a space shuttle, tons upon tons of technology places a shining star in the heavens.

Into the Future

It is predicted that one day, technology will help paraplegics walk, cars to drive themselves, and tornados, and hurricanes to be predicted well in advance. However, not everyone believes that technology is the great balm for our human problems. What needs to be explored is how technology can be used as our assistants, not as our enslavers. Educating ourselves not only on WHAT exists, but also by demystifying the HOW of its functions, can help us view this genie in another light. That is the mission of this Website: To inform, clarify, and explore technology's impacts on your Business, our Culture, our Society, and yes, even Religion.
