INTRODUCTION

In 1983 I realized that the Richey family was on the verge of a changing of the guard as one whole generation with all their knowledge, wisdom, and experience was about to pass on.  When this happens, it will no longer be possible to speak with those that have direct knowledge of family history and event, and much valuable information will be lost unless it cam be preserved.  I felt then, and feel even more strongly now, that this family history information needs to be preserved.  I want my children to known who they are, and to know that they had noble ancestors who sacrificed much so that the generations that followed them could have a better life.

When a generation passes on, they leave behind them letters, diaries, photographs, and artifacts that taken together can give a pretty clear picture of their life and times.  Inevitably, however, these items get spread among a large and expanding posterity.  Ultimately, they will be destroyed by the inexorable processes of time.

It seems to me that the only way to combat this process of dilution and loss was to compile family historical information into book form and then distribute this book to as many interested people as possible. The modern copy machines allows us to forego the unpleasantness that Nephi had to go through to get his family history.

I must confess that I have been much less successful in my self appointed task of compiler than I had hoped.   I have really done very little, and there is so much to do.  Perhaps the most difficulty and time consuming part of the work is checking everything for accuracy.  This really isn't very much fun, and gets left till last.  Consequently I fear that there are many mistakes in this small book.  It goes without saying that there are also large omissions.  I hope everyone that reads it will consider it just as preview of what could be done with time and  with help.

If this book stimulates the descendents of Joseph Benjamin Richey to point out errors and omissions, and perhaps to assist in filling in the gaps, it will have fulfilled its purpose.
