Family members indicate that his proper given name was Luther and that his nickname was Pat. Gedcoms abound on the internet stating that his given proper name was Claude; however, I have never seen any documentation for this other than the "infamous" Gene Pool Records Database published by Ancestry.com. In this database it lists a Claude Slaton born 1888 in Morgan Co AL with parents Williamson Cobb Slaton & Sarah Waddell. This database was gathered by geneticists with absolutely no regard for checking genealogical sources and purchased by Ancestry.com.

Although Ancestry.com stresses that information in the database has not been verified with records and that some of the data may not be correct, many people have culled records from this database and published the info online. If any one has the slightest proof that his first name was actually Claude, please share it with me!

UPDATE: I have found the 1900 Federal Census (ref: 1900: Carter, Morgan, Alabama; Roll: T623 35; Page: 2B; ED: 138.) which refers to him as Claude L Slaten. Apparently this census in conjuction w/ the genetic database at Ancestry.com is why so many list him as Claude Luther Slaten in their family trees. Apparently though from family letters that I have he was not called by his given name of Claude very much, going either by Luther or by Pat (his nickname).
