Dies--Rites Tomorrow

James H. Rhodes of 644 Volintine, retired employee of the city waterworks department of the Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division, died at 3 yesterday morning 1 at John Gaston Hospital after an illness of two weeks. He was 82. 2

Services will be at 10 tomorrow morning 1 at Bethel Assemby of God Church. Burial will be in Forest Hill with Haddad Funeral Home of Munford, Tenn., in charge.

Mr. Rhodes was born in Tipton County, Tenn., and had lived in Memphis about 25 years. He retired in 1949. He was a member of Bethel Assembly of God Church.

Mr. Rhodes leaves two daughters, Mrs. Bruce Staggs 3 of Munford and Miss Mae Rhodes 4 of 829 North Manassas; six sons, Edgar Rhodes 5 of 890 Ayers, Louis Rhodes 6 of 1130 Chelsea, Gene Rhodes 7 of 1046 Faxon, Roscoe Rhodes 8 of Huntsville, Ala., Monroe Rhodes 9 of Miami and William Rhodes10 of Hubert N. C.; three sisters11, Mrs. Joce Stewart and Mrs. Sue Dickson of Memphis and Mrs. Fan Gray of Kerrville; 14 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

1 Per Forest Hill Cemetery, James was interred on Tuesday 26 Jan 1960. This means the obituary was published on Monday 25 Jan 1960 and his death date (the day prior) would have been Sunday 24 Jan 1960.
2 Again, Per Forest Hill, the grave marker gives a year of birth of 1880, which makes him 80 at his death (as other family members had suggested), not 82 as stated in the obituary. FOLLOW UP NOTE: Death Certificate indicates a birth date of 4 JULY 1877 which confirms the age of 82 from the obit. Unknown why grave marker has 1880. However, it must be remembered that both death certificate and tombstone data are only as good as the person who supplied it.

7 Arthur Eugene "Gene" Rhodes, 10 Apr 1916 - 14 May 1998, spouse Norma Jean Carr.
8 Roscoe Reid Rhodes, 15 Oct 1905 - 09 Oct 1971, spouse of (1)Nina Louise Slaten; (2) Lucille Elrod?/Gardner? (3) Zelma Lucille Langston.
9 Monroe Rhodes, 19 Sep 1908 - unknown, spouse of ? (one son, Ernest F. Rhodes).
10 William Earl Rhodes, 14 Mar 1918 - 14 Jun 1987 (married but never had children).
11 A note from his son, Arthur Eugene "Gene" Rhodes, gives the names of his father's sisters as Josie, Susan and Fannie.
