What's New in Nevada?
New Club
November, 2003 marked the chartering of the newest club in Nevada; The Las Vegas Diabetes Club. Charter night brought 45 new Lions into the realm of Lionism. Each of the new club's members either has diabetes in some form or works as a medical professional treating diabetics in one way or another. These new Lions are dedicated to the prevention of blindness through the prevention or treatment of diabetes. They come from various disciplines but each is dedicated to the "Defeat of Diabetes." Since "Charter Night" an additional 12 new Lions have joined the club, making it the second largest club in Las Vegas.
Congratulations to each and every one of these new Lions.
New Program under Development
State LEHP/Diabetes Awareness Chairman, Donn Owens of Reno is working with the State Health Division's Gwen Posey to try and put together a program to track Native American (NA) people. Adult NA folks with diagnosed diabetes don't always follow through with recommended eye care. Some NA people don't necessarily have the level of vision care afforded others. A study is being conducted to ascertain if it would be profitable in the way of public health to try and divert some of these folks to the Washoe County Vision Services Committee to obtain examinations. When necessary they would then be moved on to "Public Health Service" facilities or to the Lions Eye Foundation in California.
Check here in the near future for the results of the Hispanic Program in Washoe County. Statistics are interesting. A decision will be made in the near future that will decide the fate of this program.
