  About Pygora Fiber

Pygora fiber is a very versatile fiber, as there are three types of fiber that
Pygora goats produce. Each fiber type has its own characteristics and uses. Personal
preference is all that makes one fiber type stand over the others.

 Pygora Fiber Types

Type A is similar to mohair with the long lustrous locks. This fiber prepares easily by carding, combing and even just flick carding the locks. Each preparation gives your yarn a different look. It also accepts dye very well, with a spectacular lustery color.

Type B is a very lofty fiber with some luster to it. It has some guard hair in it. Some breeders have bred a fiber that has a very fine, silky guard hair, that is easily spun as part of the fiber with a beautiful effect and feel to it. Those fleeces that do have guard hair in them can be processed with combs, which produces a lovely fine fiber as a result. This fiber dyes well and sometimes with very interesting effects. A good fiber to dye if you want a variegated effect to your yarn.

Type C is very similar to cashgora and there are some Type C fleeces that have acceptable micron counts to be called cashmere. Combing this fleece off the goat is the best way to retrieve the undercoat minus most of the longer guard hair. You can also shear the fleece off and the  prepare it by using mini combs for processing or some type of dehairing. This fiber produces a very soft fiber that spins very fine for those delicate projects.

 Blending

Pygora fiber blends very well with most all other fibers. You can card it right into the fiber that you are blending it with. It compliments wool very nicely adding luster and softness to it.

 Pygora Yarn

After spinning Pygora, you might wish to full it for that halo look to your yarn. Fulling really enhances Pygora fiber with that soft look to go with the very soft feel of it.

 The Fulling Process

Fulling yarn is a process used to felt the core of the yarn together. This process enhances yarn made from Pygora fiber by giving it a halo effect to the yarn. It also opens up the yarn a little and softens the yarn.

 Procedure to full your yarn:

 1. Place yarn in hot water that is almost to a boil (do not let water boil) for 3-4 minutes. Squeeze out as much water as you can, but do not wring out or twist the yarn.

 2. Place yarn in ice water for 1-2 minutes. Squeeze out as much water as you can, but do but do not wring out or twist the yarn.

 3. Now take your yarn and grab it by one end of the skein and hit it hard on a counter top, side of your house, a rock outside, etc. Continue to beat it for a couple of minutes.

Repeat Steps 1-3 two or three more times then hang your yarn to dry or try putting it in the dryer on low heat for a few minutes.
