There are several reasons and together I felt they combined to make a Good Idea.
For every good idea there are already at least ten Web Sites. I think I may have discovered a subject that has not gotten this kind of treatment. I asked a lot of questions about LILO and I have seen a lot of the same on the Usenet and local listserv, so decided to go hunting for my own answers. I've fooled with Web stuff for awhile now, but this is my first attempt at publishing. I am trying to keep it to a single subject. The Linux community in general is a great amount of help; now it's time for me to give back a little.
When I did one of my first Linux installations, I had the good fortune of having the LILO installation fail. I say "good fortune" because I am a curious fellow and this presented me with an opportunity to learn just how this program works. I found that people know a thing or two about it but no one seems to have studied it in depth.
This is natural because if your installation goes smoothly, you set it up and you never have to think about it again if (unless you upgrade something). Booting is just something the computer does when you turn it on, and that's that. And since Linux crashes are rare, a lot of people don't even get to watch their computer start up very often.
If you had a problem with it, you got help and moved on. You were probably new to the whole Linux thing and wanted to use the computer, not stop and learn about bootstraps.
Nonetheless, it's a vital link to your software. Everybody comes through here on their way into Linux. Now you have a rest stop on the way up.
