Two-drive scheme

As you add more more drives and operating systems, the configuration choices multiply. Here is an illustration to use as a guide when creating your own custom configurations.

MBR boots hda2

You are pretty much forced to put Windows on hda1. hda2 might be another DOS partition. (They would call it "C" and "D" but that can actually change!).  Linux can go anywhere--so we installed it on hdb2. LILO is in the MBR on hda--it wouldn't do any good to put it on hdb because you can't ask the BIOS to boot it from there. The important thing to note is that the MBR is the only piece of hda that you need to modify to run Linux anywhere else.
