Tips :
Setting up a saltwater fish tank the
simple way is easy. All you need is at least a thirty gallon tank , an undergravel filter
" Lees makes a good one" you tie all the plates together and make it one plate.
Next you get you some crushed corral for your bed, and wash it good with just
fresh water. Place your washed crushed corral onto your undergravel filter at about a two
inch depth , or figure about one pound of crushed corral per gallon of tank. Next put in
the number of power heads that you have up tubes for.
A good power head to use is Maxi-Jet 500 , these are good and usually trouble free
and give you years of use.
Then fill up your tank with fresh water and put in a chlorine remover , I like to use
a product called Prime.Use Prime at three drops per gallon.
Next you want to mix your salt,I will use Instant Ocean, salt mix,"Don't follow
the instructions on the bag" Use a hydromemter to measure the amount of salt you are
putting in your water."Hint , your salt has to dissolve first before you can measure
it".You want to set your salt level at 1.018 or 1.019 or 1.020 this is a good
specific gravity ,you will see this as (sp) from now on it just means ,how much salt you
put into your tank. As you adjust your sp buy adding salt if you dont have enough in your
tank or taking out saltwater and adding fresh water to your tank as needed. take a couple
of days to do this ,don't get in a hurry, dot get in a hurry about anything to do with
saltwater....After you have your tanks sp set,you are ready to put some Damsel fish into
your tank,go ahead and put five or six or more depending on the size of your tank to cycle
your tank.
For the next six to eight weeks your tank will cycle and grow the bacteria it needs
to support life.
What I have told you here is very basic and there is more than one way to do
saltwater tanks, but the old way works. This will get you started and I will cover more
later, If you want more information about the set up or want me to explain more just
e-mail me and I will.
If you have any questions about
tropical fish tanks or anything to do with freshwater tanks feel free to ask.
If you have many questions about fish
compatibility, fresh or saltwater, we can talk about that also. Also if you have any ideas
or tips, that you would like to pass on, feel free to do so, we can always learn from each
other.
