That It May Be Well With Thee

Definitions and usage

The phrase "that it may be well with thee" or "that it may go well with theee" occurs about 25 times, almost all in the book of Deuteronomy

What did they mean when they used the phrase?

Hebrew [yaw' tab] means to be good, be pleasing, be well, be glad

What does it mean for us?

Riches? Prosperity?

Or something else?

What is the context in which the phrase is used?

Always preceeded by a behavioural expectation

Do right in the sight of God (Deut 6:18)

Observe and hear the words of God (Deut 12:28)

Keep His statutes and commandments (Deut 4:40)

Sometimes very specific things:

Avoid eating blood (Deut 12:25)

Don't eat a mother bird (Deut 22:7)

Punishing evildoers (Deut 19:11-13)

Often followed by the idea of long life

Is it a rule to be followed, or is it a fact of life?

When God created the universe, he set certain physical things into motion

Gravity, enertia, physics, etc

Cause and effect

There are physical laws and spiritual laws

Violation of the law of physics results in automobile accidents, etc

Violation of spiritual laws results in sin, heartbreak

Did God say "Do the right thing and I'll reward you with 'wellness'" ?

No, wellness is a natural outcome of doing the right things

When things are not going well for us, what's the reason?

Failure to put God first in our lives
