Blessings and Curses Part 1

Background from the OT: Deuteronomy chapters 27 - 28

The value of symbols

Chapter 27 begins Moses' third speech prior to crossing over into Canaan.

They're instructed to build a monument of the Law (v 27:2-4)

They're instructed to build an altar to the Lord (v 5-8)

What's the purpose behind verse 8? Symbols help us by:

celebrating the history of the organization, the values and people that have shaped it into what it is

orienting new people into the corporate culture by showing them what matters and why

communicating core values by emphasizing, explaining, and enacting the fundamental beliefs and principles on which the enterprise is built

providing a frame of reference through which all members of the organization can establish their identity in the group, evaluate their progress, and enforce accountability
