Memories from Active Duty - August 1958 - August 1960
Aboard the U S S Everglades AD-24
My active duty in the U. S. Navy Reserves began in August 1958. I had just graduated from high school. I traveled by Greyhound bus arriving at the Philadelphia Receiving Station where I waited for a month before receiving my orders to report to the U.S.S. Everglades AD-24, in Norfolk, Virginia.
In November 1958 the Everglades left Norfolk for the Mediterranean Sea. After about two weeks we arrived in Cartegena, Spain. I remember the morning as we entered the harbor, the sea wall, the sun providing the golden light of morning, the chill of the early morning air and my disbelief that I was actually there. Thus began our Med Cruise which lasted until April 1959. Visiting Genoa, Naples, Livorno, Italy, Gulf Juan France and Gibraltar before the voyage back to Norfolk.
Then there was Dry dock in Norfolk, shakedown cruise to Gitmo, transfer of home port to Charleston, South Carolina, visits to Mayport, Florida, West Palm Beach, Florida. And under Captain Suddath a visit to his home town of Savannah, Georgia and a marching detail in their Saint Patrick's Day Parade in 1960.
Now all that was over forty years ago, now retired I have time to look over the photographs I took while on board the "Glades" and thought I'd use them to put up a web site to share my memories with fellow shipmates and their families.
