Who hasn't seen the famous RCA ads with those adorable white & black dogs
leaning over an old-fashioned phonograph,
cocking their ears in wonder as the announcer states: "His master's voice."
Nipper, the original RCA dog, was based on a real black & white fox terrier born in Bristol, England in 1884.
After his first owner died, Nipper was adopted by Francis Barroud, a London artist. The story goes, one day Barroud wound up his phonograph and saw his little dog listening to the sounds coming out of the phonograph's horn. Inspired by the dog's unusual pose, Barroud painted the scene which he titled "His Master's Voice."
Barroud later sold the portrait to the Gramophone Company. The painting was an instant success as an advertising figure for the company's successor, Victor Talking Machine Company.
In 1929, RCA purchased Victor, and continued to use Nipper. During the 1960's and 70's, poor little Nipper was banished to the trademark doghouse, but was brought back in 1978.
Today, a live version of Nipper, and his adorable puppy companion named Chipper, are highlights of RCA's commercials and advertising campaigns.
