In 1950, commercial artist Bob Watkins was hired by Miles, Inc., the maker of Alka-Sletzer, to draw a character to help sell the bicarbonate. He did several sketches of a character originally named Sparky. Little did he know that his sketch would become one of America's top spokespersons. Sparky became Speedy and the rest is history. Speedy, the Alka Seltzer mascot, represents one of the nation's most famous home remedies for everything from hangovers to upset stomaches.
