Country Dancing
Scottish
Country Dancing is the social ballroom dancing of the Scottish manor houses.
Scottish Country Dancing dates from the 12th Century, becoming popluar
in the 13th Century. It traces its history from the French Court (with
its minuets) through the English Court where it took on its "country" aspect.
World War
I introduced many Scots to the world and other dance forms. With the beginning
of the Jazz Age, the old traditional dances were being forgotten or highly
embellish. So, in 1923, the Scottish Country Dance Society was formed
to preserve this part of our Scottish Heritage. Relying on first
hand information from older Scots who had been traught the traditional
way, plus collections of published materials, the dancing was standardized
and recorded for posterity. Achieving royal patronage in 1953, the Royal
Scottish Country Dance Society numbers over 24,000 members world wide (including
Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth).
