New Issues
New releases out include titles by the Toshiko Akiyoshi Jazz Orchestra and The Drummonds on TLE and Bobby Shew/George Robert and Thierry Lang/Toots Thielemans on TCB.
Trombonist Roswell Rudd has a new one out on Sunnyside that sounds intriguing: it was recorded in Mali with African musicians.
There's a batch of releases on Stunt from Johnny Griffin, Jim McNeely, Ben Besiakov/George Garzone, Marie Bergman, Jakob Dineson/Kurt Rosenwinkel and Bo Steif.
Also out are titles by Steven Kirby on A Records; Jeff Friedman on Accurate; Brian Trainor and the Dixieland Ramblers on Summit; and Bob Mintzer on DMP.
Plus: Jason Bivins and Tigersmilk on Family Vineyard; Darrell Katz on Innova; the Marsalis Family on Marsalis Music; Flip Phillips on Arbors; and Bill Evans on ESC.
Reissues & Vintage Issues
Reissues & vintage issues this week include a vintage title from Ruby Braff and Ralph Sutton on Chiaroscuro. The sad news is trumpeter Braff's death on Sunday, 2/9 at the age of 75.
Reissues include a big batch of the budget-priced Jazz in Paris series from the French Gitanes label. Some of the musicans include Blossom Dearie, Dizzy Gillespie, Stephane Grappelli, Bobby Jaspar, Joe Newman and Sarah Vaughan. You can find the full listings below. There will be some more titles out on 2/18. There's also a series of French soundtracks that include playing by Stan Getz and Jimmy Smith. I've listed some other titles in this series in the non-jazz section below.
The intersting Danish Storyville label will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary next month. This month they have releases of titles from Dexter Gordon, Ella Fitgerald/Fletcher Henderson, Woody Herman, Glen Gray and Art Tatum. The Tatum title is the first in a series of mostly unissued recordings.
Other reissues include several titles originally on JMT from Cold Sweat, Bob Stewart, Geri Allen/Charlie Haden/Paul Motian that are now out on Winter & Winter.
Basta has releases by Raymond Scott and the Beau Hunks. The former features rare and unreleased recordings and the later is a DVD tat features a recreation of a "Laurel and Hardy" score.
Also out are reissues by Django Reinhardt, Charlie Shavers and Lennie Tristano on Epm; Chet Baker, John Coltrane, Jimmy Dorsey and Gerry Mulligan on Definitive and Sarah Vaughan on Action.
Plus: Tony Williams on Ark 21 and Gary Lucas on Knitting Factory.
There are also some Japanese reissues of records originally on EmArcy, Inner City, etc.
Non-jazz releases out of possible interest include Uri Caine on Winter & Winter.
