Trio Aab -
Wherever I Lay My Home That's My Hat (Omnitone)
It is beyond my capacity to categorize the music of this Scottish trio. Instrumentally an ensemble of saxophones, guitar and drums, the musical structures and intensities vary too much to label.
But what can be said is that this is some of the most intriguing, cross-fertilized music around. Self-described as "dark," it is really a compendium of moods. Trio AAB likes to work from rhythmic patterns, almost like the multi-beat count of a raga, but with the pattern recycling and then shifting into new paradigms. Sax or guitar can articulate the rhythm or, atop and across it, wail and speed. Inspiration comes from, and is dedicated overtly to, John Coltrane and Ornette Coleman, as well as a hint of Scottish music, the world of rock guitar, and the eclecticism of Frank Zappa.
Not for the timid,
Wherever... is a daunting recording, and the finale, the title piece, is a soaring work bridging jazz and rock with tremendous potency. For those with a sense of both adventure and whimsy.
