CD Reviews
[home.att.net/~lankina/jazz/reviews.html]
This week we review a jazz-fusion release by
Tunnels (Buckyball)
and have a pair of capsule reviews below.

Recent jazz releases

~~~
Tierney Sutton -
Something Cool (Telarc Jazz) Sept 24
Vocalist
Tierney Sutton follows up last years' excellent Bill Evans' tribute,
Blue in Green, with a program of standards on her new release,
Something Cool. She's included three tunes by Lerner and Loewe from My Fair Lady and a version of Willie Nelson's "Crazy," as well as tunes by Johnny Mercer and Duke Ellington and a beautiful reading of Howard Dietz's "Alone Together."
Her voice threatens to turn into a horn as she scats her way through "Ding Dong! The Witch is Dead" and she interacts and improvises well with her very good backing band, singing sweetly and agilely on this charming new recording.
   — ALAN LANKIN, Nov 2002
~~~
Matthias Lupri Group -
Same Time Twice (Summit) Oct 1
Vibraphonist
Matthias Lupri has come out with an adventurous, straight-ahead jazz date with
Same Time, Twice.
Joined on the front line by guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel and saxophonist Mark Turner, some of the playing and compositions are reminiscent of the mid-1970s Gary Burton group with Pat Metheny or late 1960s Blue Note recordings.

Reissues & vintage issues
Reissues & vintage issues this week include
a disc of unreleased
Sun Ra on
Atavistic from his early Chicago period. The label
also reissues a set by
Fred Van Hove.
Capitol has a disc
of duets from
Frank Sinatra's
1957-60 TV shows. It's their first time on CD. Capitol
also is reissuing their nice 4-CD
Nat King Cole overview.
Jazz labels are getting ready for the holidays--we have boxed sets out this
week from three labels. We'll start with
Concord, which has a box set
of
George Shearing/Mel Torme recordings which includes a disc of unreleased recordings.
As they've sometimes done in prior years,
Mosaic Records
has released several sets of
Capitol recordings
to general retail; this year they've released the
Gene Krupa/Harry James and
Four Freshman sets. If these are on your wish list, this is
a good opportunity to get them at a discount.
And
Collectables
has two big sets of
Atlantic
recordings
of
John Lewis and
Wilbur DeParis which are a good deal price-wise.
Collectables
also has reissues out
of
titles from
Atlantic and
Columbia
by
Rosemary Clooney,
King Curtis/Champion Jack Dupree,
Jean-Luc Ponty and
Joe Turner.
Other reissues include
