Either/Orchestra -
Afro-Cubism (Accurate) Oct 22
Led by tenor saxophonist and composer Russ Gershon, the Boston-based ten-piece
Either/Orchestra has been performing and recording for over fifteen years. Their new album,
Afro-Cubism, is an album of contemporary Latin jazz with three tunes by Gershon, one by pianist Gregory Burk, a Latin jazz version of George Harrison's "Don't Bother Me," and an Ethiopian Latin jazz tune from the 1960s. Gershon’s arrangements have good horn voicings and he elicits some tight ensemble playing from his musicians, who include veterans Tom Halter on trumpet and Charlie Kohlase on baritone sax as well as some talented newcomers.
The music is here is accessible without being a simple re-creation of the past; it's sophisticated while remaining quite listenable. There are some good solos and I especially liked the baritone sax sound of Kohlase who makes his last E/O recordings after fourteen years with the band.
The sessions for this album went so well that they had enough material for two releases. The Latin-jazz style material is on this release; the more regular jazz material will be released on another album next Spring. I’m looking forward to hearing the other half of the session on Neo-Modernism next year.

Dom Minasi Trio
-
Goin' Out Again (CDM) Oct 10
Guitarist Dom Minasi's last album was an avant-garde exploration of Duke Ellington themes called Takin' The Duke Out. Minasi returns with Goin' Out Again, an album that's half jazz standards and half originals.
He often starts a tune melodically and then gets more abstract, perhaps putting in some of his fast, blurry runs over the pulse of drummer Jackson Krall and bassist Ken Filiano. Minasi, who was away from jazz for seventeen years until the mid-1990s, has returned with renewed vigor, approaching standards with freshness and imagination, while twisting them a bit, and keep us interested in his approach to tunes such as Miles Davis's "All Blues" or Thelonious Monk's "Well You Needn't."
