Cecil Taylor
The Willisau Concert
(Intakt)

One note. A two-bar phrase. A two-bar phrase repeated.

A two-bar phrase repeated, expanded, varied and transformed, soft and loud, fierce and gentle. A 97-key Bossendorfer Imperial piano pounded, pumelled and caressed.

Cecil Taylor displays intense concentration on this solo piano concert from 2000. Listening, I feel as if I’m peeking into a closed universe, spending fifty minutes suspended in non-Newtonian time.

We’re brought back to Earth on three short encores.

The Willisau Concert is one of Cecil's best solo performances.

ALAN LANKIN, Dec. 2002
