With current technology, musicians can self-issue releases in small batches to help document their work and distribute it. One musician doing this is drummer Paul Corio. His small New York jazz label Rent Control Records has so far issued seven releases in CDR format, all in attractively-designed packages with cover designs featuring text over geometric patterns that perhaps reflect Corio's former studies of abstract painting.
Most of the label's previous releases have been built around a core group of musicians—two of the label's earlier releases were by the trio of trumpeter Andrew Paulsen, soprano saxophonist Jeremy Stark and drummer Corio. This new release, called Indoor Record, adds Tom Abbs to the trio and has a wider sonic palette due to the addition his tuba and bass plus Stark's addition of bass clarinet to his usual Steve Lacy-influenced soprano sax.
At times reminiscent of the classic (and also piano-less) Ornette Coleman quartet of the early 1960s,
much of the album features the group engaging in independent simultaneous improvisation as the music veers from being free to being melodic; from relaxed to intense. The playing is loose and leaves lots of space, but the musicians stay in synch.
Indoor Record is an enjoyable listen and I'm looking forward to hearing more from these musicians.
