*Jeremiah 27:5-7, "I have made the earth, the man and the beast that are upon the ground, by my great power and by my outstretched arm, and have given it unto whom it seemed meet unto me. And now have I given all these lands into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, my servant; and the beasts of the field have I given him also to serve him. And all nations shall serve him, and his son, and his son's son, until the very time of his land come: and then many nations and great kings shall serve themselves of him."

In 587 B.C., when Nebuchadnezzar made an end of destroying Jerusalem, Nebuzaradan, captain of the Babylonian guard, freed Jeremiah from the prison in which Zedekiah had bound him and set him at liberty to go wherever his conscience led him. But many who had escaped of Judah determined to flee into Egypt and took Jeremiah with them.
While In Egypt God instructed Jeremiah to take stones and hide them in Pharoah Necho's courtyard in the site of all those who had fled from Judah. "Say unto them, Thus saith the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel; Behold, I will send and take Nebuchadrezzar the king of Babylon, my servant, and will set his throne upon these stones that I have hid; and he shall spread his royal pavilion over them. And when he cometh, he shall smite the land of Egypt, and deliver such as are for death to death; and such as are for captivity to captivity; and such as are for the sword to the sword. And I will kindle a fire in the houses of the gods of Egypt; and he shall burn them, and carry them away captives: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment; and he shall go forth from thence in peace. He shall break also the images of Bethshemesh, that is in the land of Egypt; and the houses of the gods of the Egyptians shall he burn with fire," (*Jeremiah 43:10-13.)
*Ezekiel 29:17-21 And it came to pass in the seven and twentieth year, in the first month, in the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon caused his army to serve a great service against Tyrus: every head was made bald, and every shoulder was peeled: yet had he no wages, nor his army, for Tyrus, for the service that he had served against it: Therefore thus saith the Lord GOD; Behold, I will give the land of Egypt unto Nebuchadrezzar king of Babylon; and he shall take her multitude, and take her spoil, and take her prey; and it shall be the wages for his army. I have given him the land of Egypt for his labour wherewith he served against it, because they wrought for me, saith the Lord GOD. In that day will I cause the horn of the house of Israel to bud forth, and I will give thee the opening of the mouth in the midst of them; and they shall know that I am the LORD.
A clay tablet which was found had the following inscription written on it; "In the thirty-seventh year of Nebuchadnezzar, king of the country of Babylon, he went to Egypt to make war. Amasis, king of Egypt, collected his army, and marched and spread abroad." Thus were fulfilled the words of the prophets Jeremiah and Ezekiel.
Having completed the subjugation of Phoenicia, and inflicted chastisement on Egypt, Nebuchadnezzar now set himself to rebuild and adorn the city of Babylon (Dan. 4:30), and to add to the greatness and prosperity of his kingdom by constructing canals and aqueducts and reservoirs surpassing in grandeur and magnificence everything of the kind mentioned in history. (*Easton's Bible Dictionary)
But Nebuchadnezzar forgot that it was the Lord of lords who set him up as king. Although he paid homage to the God of the Jews he did not realize that the High God could also take away all that he had in one moment in time. He did not listen to Daniel's warning, "Wherefore, O king, let my counsel be acceptable unto thee, and break off thy sins by righteousness, and thine iniquities by shewing mercy to the poor; if it may be a lengthening of thy tranquillity."

*Isaiah 14:4-10, "That thou shalt take up this proverb against the king of Babylon, and say, How hath the oppressor ceased! the golden city ceased! The LORD hath broken the staff of the wicked, and the sceptre of the rulers. He who smote the people in wrath with a continual stroke, he that ruled the nations in anger, is persecuted, and none hindereth. The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet: they break forth into singing. Yea, the fir trees rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon, saying, Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us. Hell from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming: it stirreth up the dead for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth; it hath raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. All they shall speak and say unto thee, Art thou also become weak as we? art thou become like unto us?"

As Nebuchadnezzar looked out at the empire he had created and exalted himself a voice came from heaven declaring that the kingdom was departed from him. Nebuchadnezzar's countenance changed and madness consumed him. As Isaiah had prophesied, so it would come to pass. *Isaiah 14:16-22,"They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms; That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof; that opened not the house of his prisoners? All the kings of the nations, even all of them, lie in glory, every one in his own house. But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet. Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, and slain thy people: the seed of evildoers shall never be renowned. Prepare slaughter for his children for the iniquity of their fathers; that they do not rise, nor possess the land, nor fill the face of the world with cities. For I will rise up against them, saith the LORD of hosts, and cut off from Babylon the name, and remnant, and son, and nephew, saith the LORD."
Because of his pride God caused a strange illness to affect Nebuchadnezzar which lasted until seven times or seven years ended. Easton's Bible Dictionary tells us, "A remarkable confirmation of the Scripture narrative is afforded by the recent discovery of a bronze door-step, which bears an inscription to the effect that it was presented by Nebuchadnezzar to the great temple at Borsippa as a votive offering on account of his recovery from a terrible illness."
At the end of the time appointed Nebuchadnezzar look towards heaven, his understanding returned, and he blessed the most High. He praised and honored Him Who lives forever. The Most High God Whose dominion is an everlasting dominion, and His kingdom is from generation to generation. All the inhabitants of the earth are considered nothing and He does according to His will in the army of heaven and among the inhabitants of the earth. No one can stop His hand, or ask Him, What are You doing? (verse 34 & 35)
Nebuchadnezzar returned to his throne and died in B.C. 562 after a reign of forty-three years. He was succeeded by his son Evil-merodach who reigned for two years. He was succeeded by Neriglissar (559-555), who was succeeded by Nabonadius, Belshazzar (555-538). Less than twenty-five years after the death of Nebuchadnezzar Babylon would fall to Cyrus the head of the combined armies of Media and Persia.

*Jeremiah 33:1-6, "Moreover the word of the LORD came unto Jeremiah the second time, while he was yet shut up in the court of the prison, saying, Thus saith the LORD the maker thereof, the LORD that formed it, to establish it; the LORD is his name; Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. For thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel, concerning the houses of this city, and concerning the houses of the kings of Judah, which are thrown down by the mounts, and by the sword; They come to fight with the Chaldeans, but it is to fill them with the dead bodies of men, whom I have slain in mine anger and in my fury, and for all whose wickedness I have hid my face from this city. Behold, I will bring it health and cure, and I will cure them, and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. And I will cause the captivity of Judah and the captivity of Israel to return, and will build them, as at the first."

&As mentioned previously, the book of Daniel is not in chronological order. For this reason, the chapters have been alphabetized in this study rather than numbered according to the chapters. Next we will view chapter seven which will place the study in chronological order. Please read through chapter seven and observe it carefully before beginning the next study.
