'THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT'
|
|
- *Genesis 15
1-21, "After these things the word of the LORD came
to Abram in a vision, saying, 'Do not fear, Abram, I am a
shield to you; your reward shall be very great.' And
Abram said, 'O Lord God, what wilt Thou give me, since I
am childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of
Damascus?' And Abram said, 'Since Thou hast given no
offspring to me, one born in my house is my heir.'
-
- Then behold,
the word of the LORD came to him, saying, 'This man will
not be your heir; but one who shall come forth from your
own body, he shall be your heir.' And He took him outside
and said, 'Now look toward the heavens, and count the
stars, if you are able to count them.' And He said to
him, 'So shall your descendants be.'
-
- Then he
believed the LORD; and He reckoned it to him as
righteousness. And He said to him, 'I am the LORD who
brought you out of Ur of the Chaldeans, to give you this
land to possess it.' And he said, 'O Lord God, how may I
know that I shall possess it?' So He said to him, 'Bring
Me a three year old heifer, and a three year old female
goat, and a three year old ram, and turtledove, and a
young pigeon.' Then he brought all these to Him and cut
them in two, and laid each half opposite the other; but
he did not cut the birds. And the birds of prey came down
upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.
- Now when the
sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and
behold, terror and great darkness fell upon him. And God
said to Abram, 'Know for certain that your descendants
will be strangers in a land that is not theirs, where
they will be enslaved and oppressed four hundred years.
But I will also judge the nation whom they will serve;
and afterward they will come out with many possessions.
And as for you, you shall go to your fathers in peace;
you shall be buried at a good old age. Then in the fourth
generation they shall return here, for the iniquity of
the Amorite is not yet complete.' And it came about when
the sun had set, that it was very dark and behold, there
appeared a smoking oven and a flaming torch which passed
between these pieces.

- On that day
the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, 'To your
descendants I have given this land, from the river of
Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: the
Kenite and the Kenizzite and the Kadmonite and the
Hittite and the Perizzite and the Rephaim and the Amorite
and the Canannite and the Girgashite and the
Jebusite'."
-
- *Genesis
17:1-21, "Now when Abram was ninety-nine years old,
the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, "I am
God Almighty; walk before Me, and be blameless. And I
will establish My covenant between Me and you, and I will
multiply you exceedingly." And Abram fell on his
face, and God talked with him, saying, "As for Me,
behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be the
father of a multitude of nations. No longer shall your
name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham; for
I will make you the father of a multitude of nations. And
I will make you exceedingly fruitful, and I will make
nations of you, and kings shall come forth from you. And
I will establish My covenant between Me and you and your
descendants after you throughout their generations for an
everlasting covenant, to be God to you and to your
descendants after you. And I will give to you and to your
descendants after you, the land of your sojournings, all
the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I
will be their God.'
-
- God said
further to Abraham, 'Now as for you, you shall keep My
covenant, you and your descendants after you throughout
their generations. This is My covenant, which you shall
keep, between Me and you and your descendants after you;
every male among you shall be circumcised. And you shall
be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it
shall be the sign of the covenant between Me and you. And
every male among you who is eight days old shall be
circumcised throughout your generations, a servant who is
born in the house or who is bought with money from any
foreigner, who is not of your descendants. A servant who
is born in your house or who is bought with your money
shall surely be circumcised; thus shall My covenant be in
your flesh for an everlasting covenant. But an
uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of
his foreskin, that person shall be cut off from his
people; he has broken My covenant.'
-
- Then God
said to Abraham, 'As for Sarai your wife, you shall not
call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall be her name. And I
will bless her, and indeed I will give you a son by her.
Then I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of
nations; kings of peoples shall come from her.' Then
Abraham fell on his face and laughed, and said in his
heart, 'Will a child be born to a man one hundred years
old? And will Sarah, who in ninety years old, bear a
child?' And Abraham said to God, 'Oh that Ishmael might
live before Thee!' But God said, 'No, but Sarah your wife
shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac;
and I will establish My covenant with him for an
everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. And
as for Ishmael, I have heard you; behold, I will bless
him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him
exceedingly. He shall become the father of twelve
princes, and I will make him a great nation. But My
covenant I will establish with Isaac, whom Sarah will
bear to you at this season next year'."
-
- The world
would forge ahead for another 2,000 years never realizing
the significance of the covenant which God had
established with Abraham. God chose Abraham, through whom
the world would receive the greatest gift of all; the
gift of eternal life through His Son Jesus Christ.
-
- The blood
that was shed in 2048 was of the likeness of the covenant
that God would establish with the world through the
sacrifice of His only begotten Son. A promise of hope,
peace, prosperity, and a heritage.
-
- Enter His covenant of heritage
through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.

- *Isaiah
7:14, "Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a
sign; Behold a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and
shall call his name Immanuel."
