"The Knob Mountain Motorcycle chapter began at the very wet 1988 WCW Rally in northern Georgia. It rained all Friday and Saturday --- finally clearing about nine o'clock Sunday morning, in time for the ride home.
On Friday evening, a group of wet riders from the Hickory, NC, area straggled into the campground and gathered (huddled) around a picnic table under a dining canopy where they were joined by other campers seeking shelter from the inclement weather. On Saturday, the same group passed the long wet day by telling stories, jokes, and swapping lies.
One of the riders wore a hat with the inscription "Knob Mt., NC", which
is a small community near Hickory. Someone jokingly suggested that
a social club be organized whose main goal would be to attend BMW rallies
and to
have a good time. Late that night, after serious discussion,
the club was officially formed with eight charter members. Throughout
the year, the club attended numerous rallies, and at the 1989 WCW Rally,
it won "The
largest Club in Attendance" award with 17 members present.
Since then, the club has gone on to become a chartered club of BMWRA (#53) and BMWMOA (#216). There are more that 100 members from Florida to Canada. Best of all, the original goals are still intact: to attend BMW rallies, to have a good time, and not take ourselves too seriously."
