ABOUT SOUTHSIDE CHURCH OF GOD IN CHRIST

MISSION STATEMENT

The primary purpose of the Southside Church of God Christ is to function as a Christian fellowship, where the gospel of Jesus Christ is preached, and the ordinances and doctrine of the church is taught and administered.

We, the Southside Church of God in Christ, a Christian community in Jacksonville, Florida, believe we are called upon to serve and carry out Christ's mission in the world.

We are obligated to take vital interest in the perpetuation of Christianity. We endeavor to celebrate the joy of the gospel in worship, study, teaching, and proclamation.

We have been challenged by the Holy Spirit to identify and serve the needs within our congregation, our community and the world

We believe that Christ has commanded us to give cheerfully. Therefore, we will give our time, treasure, and ourselves for the growth and furtherance of Christ's kingdom.

HISTORY

In 1938 the church known as the Southside Church of God in Christ was founded. A woman named Gertrude Thomas was instrumental in the organizing of a congregation that consisted of a few members who met regularly in a little house for prayer and Bible study. She was inspired to invite for a revival service, Bishop James Hinsley, who later became the first pastor. Many of the founding members who were saved and filled during the revival are the late Mother Ethel Butler, the late Sister Gladys Stubbs, the late Sister Eliza Long, Sister Louisa Jenkins, Mother Martha Robinson (mother of our current pastor), and the late Elder George Robinson (father of our current pastor). Many say that there had never been a revival like that one because its effects shook the whole town. Bishop Hinsley pastored the Congregational COGIC for 2 years until 1940 when the congregation officially came under the COGIC, Inc. Bishop Hinsley pastored 6 years befor returning to to Atlanta, Georgia. Bishop Jessie E. Williams was appointed pastor and later became the Jurisdictional Bishop of Central Florida. Because the church was located on the south side of Jacksonville, it was named " Southside Church of God in Christ". When Bishop Williams died in 1978, Bishop Jacob Cohen appointed Elder E. C. Taylor as interim pastor.

In 1979, a son of the church, Elder Edward Robinson, was appointed as pastor of Southside. He engineered an extensive church reorganizational plan that focused on ministerial, budgetary, spiritual growth and personal development.

In 1981, the present edifice on St. Augustine Road was completed and dedicated. The church has experienced accelerated growth in membership and ministries. We are a purpose driven church. Our mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ, teach Biblical doctrine, administer the ordinances, and serve the health, education, and welfare of the community.

The vision to expand the church facilities to accomodate the church's need, was divinely given to our pastor a few years ago. The vision led him to the present properties on Emerson Street. The congregation recognized the extensive needs of the ministry and began to rally behind the efforts to make the vision become a reality. On Sunday October 27, 1999 at 4:30 p.m. we had groundbreaking ceremony for "The Miracle on Emerson Street".
