I try to the very best of my ability to produce a progressive, feminist environment for learning which is obviously quite difficult to do in a university setting. The learning environment that I strive to create is one that is characterized by the following qualities:

  • awareness - of the situated contexts from which knowledge is produced and promoted and of the differing contexts of power from which individuals/groups produce meaning
  • egalitarianism - limitation/eradication of social hierarchy as an expression of power
  • respecting individualism/community - importance of the authority of personal experience/voice and the differences in meanings of experiences among diverse communities
  • plurality - simultaneous multiple, plural approaches to inquiry, truth and knowledge
  • liberty - freedom of choice among many possibilities; understanding the implications or consequences of choice and the act of choosing
  • change - a delight in and awareness of variability in the social world, and a recognition of the instability of meanings across places, groups, and time
