A ROLE OF MIRROR NEURONS IN CREATVITY AND WHY
THE SOLUTON MACHINE
WORKS BY MIMICING THE BRAIN'S
NATURAL CREATIVE PROCESSES
The great question of what exactly creativity is all about is finally
within the realm of possibility to answer. Let us begin by looking at a
simple example of the creative process to give our discussion a clear foundation.
PART ONE: THE ARCHIMDEDES STORY and CREATIVITY
You all remember the story about Archimedes. In ancient times, he was asked
by the king to find out if a goldsmith had cheated him. The king had given
the goldsmith an amount of gold to make a crown, which the goldsmith did.
But the king wondered if the goldsmith has taken part of the gold and made
the crown with less gold. Since the crown was so irregularly shaped, you
coul
dn't easily measure it's volume.
It was Archimedes problem, to come up with a way of measuring the crown's
volume. Try has he might, Archimedes couldn't apply Geometry to the situation.
Then, one day when he was taking a bath, he noticed that the bath water
level rose, as he sunk into the tub. Suddenly he said "Eureaka"
and went off running naked in the streets to the palce to tell the king
"I found it". He could measure the volume of the crown by seeing
how much water it displaced.
That was a creative solution, and one we can picture as below
Crown Bath water
Weighing <-------- CREATIVE <------- Displacement
VOLUME PROBLEM CONNECTION ACTIVITY
As you can see from the diagram several things happened as this particular
problem was solved
1. The problem situation has some required action implcit. In this case
the required action was finding the volume. This was critical because it
gave focus to the problem solving and, as we shall see later, defining the
problem as an action activated a critical part of the brain.
2. The problem was solved by taking some element outside the problem, in
this case the displacement of the bathwater has Archimedes entered, and
applying that element to the original problem.
3. The problem was solved with a visual connection. The breakthrough was
not logical or rational, it contained visualizations of the bathwater displacement
as applied to the measuring the crown problem.
PART TWO : THE NECESSARY CREATIVE FUNCTIONING OF THE BRAIN
Now the question is what kind of a mechanism in the brain must exist to
allow this type of thing, i.e. creativity, to happen? The brain must be
able to do four things to allow this to happen.
A. It must have some mechanism to record visual stimuli. If not,
it couldn't have applied the bath water to the weighing problem.
B. It must be fooled and not be able to tell the difference between SEEING
something in one situation, and DOING it in another. That is "SEEING"
the bathwater rise and "SOLVING" the crown volume must be seen
as the same thing.
C. It must be able to transfer information from one context to another
seamlessly and apply the new information to an old context.
D. Finally, It must do both of these things, i.e. making the connection,
totally unconsciously. It's not as though the person consciously thought
about how to connect the Seeing event and the Doing event.
This is some remarkable capability. It allows for the blindkingly fast creative
transfer of information in one context to another. Remember this is all
unconscious. Archimedes didn't ask himself, "How do I apply this"
his brain was fooled and be capable of making the connection.
PART THREE : THE FUNCTIONING OF MIRROR NEURONS
Both of these capabilities have been shown to exist in the "Mirror
Neuron" section of the brain. To the Mirror Neurons, seeing something
causes the same reaction in the brain, as if the person is doing that same
thing. That capability results in everything from Empathy, to the enthusiasm
we all feel watching a sporting event. But it also results in creativity
and it's needed connection to seeing and doing.
One example of the way Mirror Neurons work is when we view sporting events.
We are seeing the players playing a sport, but we are experiencing it as
if we ourselves were doing it. The same thing happens when dancers see films
of peple doing dance steps they already know how to do. The Mirror Neurons
respond as if the viewer was dancing himself.
Performing or Viewing an Event
Experiencing an <------- MIRROR <-------- Externally or
Event personallly NEURONS at a distance
Now all this seems very similar to the way the brain functions in creative
problem solving. With the Seeing a new situation and applying it back to
a problem.
How could we use this ability the brain has to solve problems creatively
in a more organized way? How could we develop a method that would cause
the brain to make these connections?
PART FOUR : THE SOLUTION MACHINE PROCESS
The Solution Machine takes you through a process EXACTLY similar to the
one the brain goes through, in natural creativity. The person first thinks
of a fantasy situation and then connects it to his or her problem. Duing
this process the brain is seeing something and cannot tell the differences
between seeingf the fantasy chacter doing something and actually doing it.
In pictures
Needed Fantasy
Problem <------ TRIGGER QUESTIONS <------- Situation
Solution Activity
Action
The triggering questions ask you to "Solve your problem the same way
as the
fantasy charcter solved his" That process stimulates the brain in the
same
way as the mirror Neurons stimulate the brain.
NOTE: At this point, this is a theory and testing with brain scans has
yet to be done.
When the person makes the connection between the fantasy activity and his
or her problem, he is doing exactly what the mirror neurons do on their
own. Making the mistake of applying one situation via a mental "mirror"
to another situation.
One of the current theories is that the "Mirror Neurons" fire becuase of some type of Intentionality. It's not just seeing something, it's seeing something that represents something that the person wants to do. If that is the case, then it could be shown that in a problem solving situation, the intent is to solve a problem and when the mirror neurons recognize that the way the fantasy person solves his problem could be applied to the persons problem.
That is exactly why The Solution Machine works. It is also exactly how The
Solution Machine, mimics the way the brain works and encourages the same
processes via the Mirror Neuronss, within the brain.
PART FIVE : TRYING THE SOLUTION MACHINE FOR YOURSELF
Now that you have seen how natural creativity works, how the brain works
during natural creativity and how The solution machine's fantasy situation
causes things to happen ver similarly, you are ready to try it for yourself
