Timothy Kemp of Harpswell,
Maine
Timothy Kemp is the first of that name
for which we can find hard evidence in the area now part of
Cumberland County, Maine. It is believed that he had a brother, Silas
Kemp, who was in Cumberland County, but removed inland to the town of
Turner, Maine. Many of the earliest settlers of Turner came from
Boston's South Shore, but no tie has been found for the Kemp's to
that area.
Circumstantial evidence would tie this
line of Kemp's to that of Samuel
Kemp of Groton. A great grandson of
Samuel, also named Silas, is found in Harpswell and Falmouth during
the early years of the Revolutionary War. However, this particular
Silas received a land bounty for his service, and in the 1790 Federal
Census, he is found in Addison County, Vermont.
